I read a lot about the MT82 taking a shit, but how does this actually happen? I don't ever nls but sometimes I do do aggressive 1-2 2-3 pulls where I'm slamming the clutch and shifter. In daily driving I just granny shift at like 4k

I plan to get an MGW shifter in the future if that'll do anything to help

Yea, you hear a lot of good things and bad things about the trans...

I have no complaints. Mines held up fine; although to be fair, I'm granny shifting 99% of the time. Even when I push the car a bit, I'm being careful shifting. Not worth damaging my transmission to impress strangers on the sidewalk.

I feel like it's one of those things where if you push it, you increase the chances of damaging it... and people who own this car tend to push it...

I'm assuming it's not covered under the warranty if someone does go

In my opinion and experience over the years with several different manual transmissions. It honestly comes down to operating error. I have always put a short throw in my mustangs.. even the B&M back in the fox body days lol. I have a 17 mustang now with the mT82 also and I have installed the mgw trace spec and i like the way it feels over the stick shifter

I beat on mine during auto-x and track day events and never had an issue with the trans.. I do regular fluid changes, I don't slam it in gear and don't do that no lift shift non sense either.. I have owned the car for 3 yrs now with no complaints..

There are definitely others who would be able to answer that question better than me.
Factory warranty is 3yrs/36k right?
I would assume if you're still in that window you have a possibility of them replacing things...
I don't believe they can just arbitrarily deny you based on a "hunch" that you did something wrong.
They know what the car is and how people are going to drive them.

Someone around here will have an experience.

The MT-82 doesn’t like to be beaten on IMO, the smoother you are (not slow, smooth) the better. If you slam the piss out of it it doesn’t react well and is slower. If you’re smooth and fast the transmission works fine. If you shift like a caveman with a club it’s slower, clunky, doesn’t always go into gear, then you can have problems with it.

I put a short throw shifter and transmission brace bushing from Steeda, they both helped. I’ve heard a weighted shift knob helps to smoothen it out too but I don’t have one so I can’t say for sure.

I think this is where you get the most complaining.

I learned to drive manual on an 87 Jeep Comanche pickup , I've driven Dodge Daytona, Mazda 3 & 6, Nissan 350z, 87 & 14 Mustang GTs, 95 & 99 Mustang Cobras all with manuals and my 16 is no worse than any of those and probably better than many. Note, not all of these were my cars, some where friends and the Mazda 3 was a girlfriend.

There‘s no foolproof fix with the MT82-D4 or any other transmission, but there are certainly upgrades that you can do to them that will help reduce the chances of breakage.

I bought my car knowing I would drive it hard. My research convinced me that addressing the entire drivetrain would be best for me, so I built mine with the best parts and services that I could find. Have I gotten it right? I don’t know and only time will tell, but what I can say is, I now have peace of mind regarding my drivetrain. Here are the critical areas that I believe can be improved upon:

- Performance rated clutch
- Hitmaster Clutch Hit Control System
- Transmission internal upgrades (where applicable)
- Boomba Racing Transmission Mount (with black bushings)
- Steeda Tri-Ax Race Shifter (with stiff springs)
- Steeda Clutch Spring and Perch
- Steeda Adjustsble Polyurethane Motor Mounts
- Steeda Differential Bushing Kit (with black bushings and Through Bolt Kit)
- Steeda Stop the Hop Kit
- Steeda Differential Bracket
- Steeda Subframe Alignment Kit
- Steeda subframe Bushing Supoort Kit
- Steeda Adustable Camber Arms
- Steeda Adjustable Toe Link Kit
- Ford Performance Half Shafts
- BG Synchro Shift II

Note: This is not the only way to go about doing it, it’s just some information regarding the route that I chose. Having said all of that, I do recommend that anyone, who plans on making quick and hard shifts, at least consider doing as many drivetrain upgrades as you can.

the shifter should only require a gentle tug. If you're using biceps you're gonna break stuff. Otherwise learn how to shift without using the clutch at all. A manual transmission that is sequential you can 'bang' shifts very fast - just like a motorcycle - you just need to unload the dogs for a split second. If you want to klack off shifts, buy yourself a $6000 sequential.

1-2 is kind of notchy all the time for me, not even when I'm hooning it

come drive mine @stannypack some time. I have short-throw and Steeda bushing. Part of the problem is the linkage 'locator' bushing is made of WonderBread which means if you put undo twist/lateral force in your attempt to "hurry" the shifts, it'll balk and possibly bend/break" stuff.

If the trans doesn't want to go in, you have to back off a smidge and let the mechanicals "catch up" so it'll slide in. Not saying you can't act all caveman and you'll immediately break stuff, but you're on borrowed time if you keep it up.

I put the trans bushing (front) as well, and at full song you get quite the growl from the trans but when you're clearing 6000RPM it's not like you care about NVH at that point.

I had my 3-4 shift fork break on my '18 at around 40k miles. It didn't make a sound when it happened. Felt like a normal shift (around 4k rpm's)but when I let the clutch out and hit the gas the rpms just went up and nothing was there. The dealership upgraded all the forks and replaced some gears. There is a TSB for the 2018's having weak forks and It was all covered under warranty. The transmission has been great for 30k miles since the repair but I have a hard time trusting it somethings. lol.

Cool I'll text you sometime. I plan to get the mgw racespec but standard/standard combo with the least short throw since I like the feel of rowing through all the gears.

I would hold off on the shifter is you are concerned about the MT82D4. A shifter would definitely void your warranty for the transmission.

That being said MT82D4s after 2019 have had very little problems. Mine has been solid since new 3.5 yrs. ago and I bang with the best of em.
