Coating the Mach…

OK, so I’m getting ready to do a wash, clay, and light polish to my new Mach 1. The selling dealership supposedly had the car “protected” by Auto Butler. I can see a few marks in the paint from the machine (a brush car wash basically) that I’ll correct first. My question to you all is this… I had a new leftover bottle of Turtle Wax Ice Shine and Seal sealant, as well as a bottle of Adam’s Graphene Ceramic spray coating. I’m thinking I’m going to lay the sealant down first, allow it to cure for a day or two, then apply the ceramic. Do you think there will be any bonding issues doing this? Most of what I’ve quickly found is you use one or the other… but why not both?

The car lives in the garage and only comes out on dry days, so the longevity of the product isn’t as big of an issue for me. If I like the Adam’s spray, I’ll probably get the more expensive bottle coating next year. Any who, thoughts?

Use one or the other. They’re not really designed to work with each other given that they’re two different companies and two different types of products. You can however use the Adam’s spray as a topper for their Graphene coating.

Not sure your ceramic spray will stick to the turtle wax. Usually after paint correction and before ceramic coating is applied, the entire car is whipped down with a cleaner or alcohol to remove any wax or coating to ensure the ceramic bonds with the paint. I believe the wax will inhibit the bonding of the ceramic. Not a professional just what I've read and been told by a friend who details and ceramic coatings.

I guess I should add that the sealant is polymer based liquid applied similarly to ceramic coatings. Not an old school oil/wax based sealant.

They’ll still fight each other. The Adam’s spray is really good on its own. I don’t have any experience with Seal & Shine but Turtle Wax has put out some good products the last couple of years. The Adam’s will probably have a little more longevity than TW.

I guess I should add that the sealant is polymer based liquid applied similarly to ceramic coatings. Not an old school oil/wax based sealant.

Definitely don't do this, the ceramic coating will not bond properly and will fail prematurely. That's not dissing those products, it's just they will not be compatible with a ceramic coating. From my experience, if you are going to invest the time and money into polishing and ceramic coating your pride and joy, then it's best to follow the correct directions.

Ideally, you want bare clean, bare and oil free paint prior to applying a coating. The only exception to that is if you use a "primer" polish designed to lay down a similar chemistry to the coating itself. Carpro offer a product called "Essense" that offers mild correction ability, some filling ability while preparing the surface with a layer of Si02 to accept a Carpro coating. Gyeon also offer something similar called "Primer".

Having said that, you don't need to use those primer polishes, although you do need to choose your polish carefully so as to not interfere with the coating. Those primer polishes above are designed alongside the coatings, if you don't use those you want a pure polish without fillers and sealants added. I love using Sonax Perfect Finish for this reason, also look into Carpro Reflect, both are super easy finishing polishes that I can vouch for.

Once polished, you then wipe the car down liberally with an IPA solution. You can mix these yourself but, again, if you are investing the time/money on this, it's always advisable to use the same brand IPA prep spray as the coating. These branded IPA products also contain lubricants that don't interfere with the coating while protecting the freshly polished paint from scratching while you wipe. Carpro Eraser and Gyeon Prep are the best available and are typically universal.

If you are willing to wait, I am just about to polish a car with Gyeon Primer and ceramic coat with Gyeon Pure EVO within the next week or so, which I plan to document here as usual. I should have something up by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Also, what ceramic coating where you aiming to apply? I can point you in the right direction if you need.

My method was to apply a proper wipe on buff off true ceramic to the car when new then use the spray on hybrid ceramic as a topper once every few months and that has worked well.

I put Adams Graphene Spray Coating on my car after properly preparing the paint. The stuff is amazing. Easy to apply and remove.

I am maintaining it with their Regular Car Shampoo and the Graphene Shampoo every other wash. Using their regular detail spray as a drying aid. Topping with regular CS3 at the end.

Next round I am going to finish off with the Graphene Boost to see what that is all about.
