How about the 17 Billion chip factory Samsung just said they will build in Texas. The so called chip shortage is an excuse for car manufacturers to charge ridiculous car prices. But until people stop throwing the check books to dealers paying these high prices, the chip shortage will never end.

It takes years and years for chip factories to come on line and start producing chips.

about 3 for a memory plant if you have the full and unbridled cooperation of Gov and the locals - eg. South Korea/Samsung. 5 years easy if you have to deal with EPA/OSHA/USGvt and the constant interference by lawyers representing every ankle-biting idiot.

The real pig in the python is wafer manufacturing and believe it or not, packaging. You simply can't grow a crystal faster - you get major lattice problems. Depo takes finite time.

The real disgusting thing is the global #1 wire-bonder company outsourced their entire manufacturing from just north of Philly to friggin' China 15 or so years ago. How that escaped export-control on national-security grounds I don't know. Israel, Korea and Japan have wire bonders too but were a step behind.

But car chips are generally old, large format, not remotely the same cost structure or complexity as modern CPU/GPU. There is no glory in making industry-critical components so it got sloughed off to the cheapest outfits. But if we keep marching down the 'Tesla'-like path the chip requirements will climb the feature ladder.

The problem is, that plant building should have started a few years ago, right after that plant in Taiwan burned down.

I think a lot of companies were waiting, hoping the .gov was going to offer incentives for chip-plant building.

the chicoms aren't hoarding so much as they aren't pathologically stupid like USA/west is. When you have your own domestic supply you can give priority to your own needs. Rail in this country is a idiotic pursuit and only done as a public works debacle and make-work for unions.

auto chips are ~same as cell phone chips. The cell phone guys pay better and aren't so STUPID like Ford et. al. were to have given up their production slots.

The problem is for all the screaming this is just a pig in a python. And with war in the offing and a MAJOR economic collapse also in the cards, all that brand spanking new chip capacity to the tune of 5-30 billion dollars will suddenly have far less orders and be uneconomical. Then what? Bailouts?

We absolutely need domestic manufacturing back and in size - no offense to the Taiwans of the world. But it remains to be seen if we have the spine to actually see it through.
