OP, @svttim is right. Put a couple of quarts in, carry a couple more and head to a more reputable Ford dealership.

I’d also advise you to not post any further engine noises or other problems with the car. Just helps so no one reads the forums and claims you should’ve sought help earlier and neglected to do so and now your engine is toast due to your negligence.

I have a 2016 Shelby gt 350. I just did an oil change in September with 10,600 miles on the car, I triple checked everything to make sure I have no leaks. I only drive the car on weekends so the miles are now at 11,800. I noticed a knocking sound started when i was driving the car a few nights ago. But when I re-started the car it went away and only came back the next day after driving for an about 20 miles on the free way. I checked the oil and the dip stick came back completely dry! So the next day I got more 5w-50 and added one quart, still nothing. I added two more quarts and the dip stick still is completely dry! There are no signs on a leak, no oil in the coolant tank, nothing in my garage floor or street outside my house! So how does 10 quarts just vanish? The car should have 13 quarts now since I added 3 more quarts and still nothing on the dip stick.
I just had my engine replaced under warranty. My 2017 was burning ~1qt per 300 miles. Note that my warranty was coming up in March. With a 2016, depending on purchase date, you may be past the 5yr window.

You can look into a factory extended warranty. Note that they do an inspection on the car before issuing one.

Your dealer is lying to you or does not know what they are talking about. As someone said, if you burn a quart or more every 500mi, it is a warranty issue.

The dip stick was full when I put 9 quarts in and so to be safe I added the 1/4ā€ of the last bottle. Now the dip stick is bone dry so I’m 10 quarts low now…

This is wrong. The dipstick doesn’t tell you when the oil is full. It’s simply a reference. Your car takes 10. 10 quarts is full. Then wherever the full 10 quarts shows up on YOUR dipstick is your new reference point.

Furthermore, when the oil is not showing on the dipstick at all, this does not mean it’s 10 quarts low. It’s maybe ~3 quarts low.

Im confused, if the oil is above at least one hole doesn't that mean its full?

No. Not necessarily. This is full; or put more appropriately, the correct level…

- Change your oil and filter
- Fill the empty engine with all 10 quarts.
- Crank it up to circulate and fill the new filter
- Check the oil. The markings on the dipstick are irrelevant. Now, they should be close, right? But manufacturing tolerances, etc!
- Wherever this 10 quarts comes to on YOUR dipstick is full. Remember that mark. If it’s at the top hole, great. If it’s at the hash marks, great. If it’s half way between the hash marks, great. Irrelevant. Just know where 10 quarts comes to on YOUR dipstick. Don’t get focused on just the markings.

But also yes…if the oil is no more than 1 quart low, then you can consider that full, in the context that you don’t have to constantly chase keeping it right dead on a certain mark all the time. Running a quart low is of zero consequence.

Never have I heard this. Not arguing, just never looked at it that way.
What happens if you were not the one changing the oil? Drive the car home making sure you bring the oil temp to 190+, shut it down then wait 15 minutes and check your dipstick hoping the service department added all 10 quarts.
I’ve done my own oil changes on my bikes and cars for decades. I’ve always held back a little until I warm up the motor before I add more. Easier to add a little than remove.

Well sure, common sense has to be applied, right?!?! If you didn’t change the oil, then you have no reference and have to trust the markings on the dipstick. But look up the specs…what is the correct quantity?? It’s 10 quarts. It is not ā€œfull to the top holeā€. It also doesn’t say full to the top hole or anywhere in between is full, it says it’s ā€œacceptableā€.

And yes, you do have to trust they added 10 quarts, cause guess what? More stories than I care to read of guys getting home and no oil on the stick. Why? Shop probably thought it was a Mustang and took 8. Who knows. I don’t. Judge, everyone had a different situation, but I hate it for guys that don’t or choose not to do their own maintenance. Especially oil changes.

Now granted, keep in mind if the oil is in the right range, we’re splitting hairs over one measly quart of oil. But it seems like the OP doesn’t have a strong basis as to his oil status or a good reference point for his engine, or a solid understanding of what it needs, so I’m just trying to help him build a good, specific foundation.

On top of the above discussed oil consumption, I think the dipstick tube has issues because at times it seems difficult to get a consistent reading (oil only on top or bottom of hash-marked side, etc.).
