I have told you I am all about personal freedom too but not in the face of a deadly pandemic. I was not joking, if people fail to take this seriously it is their just rewards. You have no idea the amount of dumbfuckery I have seen out of people. I am not living in fear either, I am just taking it seriously.

Agreed. I'm 68 yo and have never felt that my "freedom" was being taken from me. But there is also "for the greater good". We are humans before we are Americans. If we cannot care about our society than freedom is worthless.

Telling you to stay at home and not mingle with other people is hardly killing you. This hasn't been hard for me at all, I generally like being a hermit anymore anyway. I hope that the disease putters out and we can start doing things like we used too.

I like being a hermit too, but I do like to go for drives in my car. I hope not to be arrested or fined for something like that. IMO there's no common sense in making something like that illegal. That's all I'm saying.

I read this in three parts:

1. Government infringement upon freedoms. I agree that the government's ability to interfere with our daily lives should be limited. That's the basis of our democracy. However, the government's enforcement authority is granted by the people. So, in this instance, we the people have given the government the power to enforce a set of policies that we feel best protect our society. If it oversteps, it's up to us to correct it. It is also up to us to set clear termination criteria; "your emergency authorities end at this time or upon establishing these conditions." If we are not doing that, then this is where we should focus. My sense is that we are doing it, though more transparency and oversight over the funding part of the policy would be welcome.

2. Individual sacrifice; i.e., social distancing, travel limitations, etc. IMHO, these should be natural measures for us to take under the circumstances. Fellow Americans (and for that matter fellow humans) are dying and we are unable to understand, let alone control the killer. Until we can, it is incumbent upon us to make the sacrifices necessary to save lives and allow time for those within our society charged to do so (medical professionals and scientists) to develop treatments and preventative measures.

3. Appropriateness of the policy; again, social distancing, travel limitations, etc. There is enough precedent at this point for us to no what happens if we do not abide by the measures that have been put in place. The fact that the disease is not spreading as rampantly as previously predicted may be because predictions were off, but is more likely because we are taking appropriate measures. You cannot prove a negative or draw definitive causality in this case (disease slowed because I did x; terrorist attacks lessened because I did y). At best, we can deduce based on correlations. Reasonable deductions tell us that we are not done sacrificing for one another yet.

Given what's at stake, it's better to look back at this and say we overreacted than to realize that we continued to underreact. My sense is that we will not have to worry about the former being the case.

That makes three of us. I love puttering around the house. South Carolina put a "home or work" directive in place at 5:00PM yesterday. I go out during the afternoon for a nice ride. Looking at some of the idiots on the road I realized it's not the drive that was dangerous, it is the aftermath of a possible accident. Our EMS system cannot handle any more. In addition what if the driver had COVID-19 and gave it to the EMT's. I do not like it but for the safety of everyone I'll only drive if I have too.

By the way, stopped and got gas at Costco. Cannot believe the number of people with no hand or face protection. Do they really think they are immune?

I personally would prefer to get the disease, go through whatever and be done with it. It's not going away anytime soon and it will probably end up being a "high test" seasonal illness that people get all the time like a cold or flu has been in the past. I'm not going to actively try to catch something - of course not. My attitude is I will try to take care of myself and I will try not to infect anyone else, and only go to stores for things I can't easily get online, but I really would prefer to live and not fear.

I also think the sooner I get it and my body starts to fight it the sooner I become less of a future risk to others. I don't want to spend the rest of my life restricted because I might catch something, no matter how horrible it is or even if I die from it. I really don't think Freedom or Death is a stupid slogan, if that makes sense.

And when the crisis is controlled in a few weeks hopefully 93 octane is still $2.90 a gallon.

The key is doing it in a way that no one else is infected. Good luck...may be Freedom AND Death, but it's freedom, nonetheless.

I heard that the latest death estimates are revised down to ~60,000 in the US. A big number, but on the upper end of what the flu is predicted to do every year. A far cry from 2.2 million or even hundreds of thousands.

I heard today that the recovery rate from Covid 19 is 98%. Of course that assumes adequate health care resources.

I think you are joking, but you have been arguing for lockdown, not freedom. Maybe I'm just not getting the point. You are willing to die from a bullet but you are a germophobe?
