No, I wouldn't expect them to. But it looks bad that they completely stonewalled. And that's why Trump got charged with the 2nd article of impeachment. Lawyers can argue all day long if it's a valid impeachment charge. From what I've read, it looks valid.Would you, if you were President , walked in there and put yourself in that position? I wouldn't. If I have committed a crime, they should be able to prove it without my having to disprove it.
Do people charged with crimes (ie, impeached) tell the court that they will refuse to have anyone defend the charges against them in court (ie, Senate trial)? If they do, I think it's crazy to do so, and sets a bad prescience that they won't even try to defend themselves. If the Senate tries to short circuit a fair trial, they're going to look bad, and McConnell could technically get impeached for doing so.
