What? The southern wing of the Democratic Party has always been separate from the national party, and as time went the two eventually spilt apart completely. Basically, LBJ purged the Democratic Party of its segregationist southern democrats thus we now have democratic racial advocacy for social and economic liberalism aka most of the left.

However, you are correct, the GOP's early history was one of racial activism, however, at the conclusion of the civil war and reconstruction that focus was basically lost. FDR's new deal coalition basically created the modern democratic party and conservatives were basically left out and found what we have today with the GOP. Moreover, the increasingly conservative GOP then provided a home for conservative southern democrats.
