Over The Radiator Cold Air Intake, first off to me CAI should be called AAI Ambient Air Intakes.
I know this is not practical or pretty, but it works! This was a part of being able to make a 9 second pass N/A!
This is just a 5" silicone hose with a hole I cut in it for the MAF sensor. I lowered the stock radiator 3", half of that was achieved by removing the rubber bushings on the bottom radiator pegs, the other half was by cutting off the lower radiator mounts, flipping them over and welding back on. (Watson K-member)
Now before there is a bunch of negative or suggestive comments.....I work 500 miles from home, 13 hrs day and stay in a camper for my work location....so time is limited and conditions to play with car are not the best. PLUS....this was the first S550 to go 9's N/A and to date still the quickest with a 9.89.
So..... yes this could be done better than what I did and maybe somebody will market a clean setup in the future. The first 5 pics are the current setup. The rest are all the versions that lead up to my current setup.
Also it's been awhile since I've posted.....if I have posted this in the wrong area please move or let me know I need to move it.

Its a good idea and has been proven on the LS motors.
What gains do you get with that down the 1/4 Mile?
The LS guys were dropping times by .1 or so when switching to an OTR back in the day.
I only know of one shop selling these for the s550, but they charge big $

I would say at least a tenth and maybe a couple MPH.
The testing went quick and with multiple changes....I did Comp Cams Stage 3 N/A cams, I lost 60lbs and this OTR CAI....prior to this with stock cams and Ford Racing CAI in January I ran a best of 10.27 @130 DA-400'.
I did run the OTR at the last NMRA race in October, I just had the hose behind the stock grille (see pic just above the pony) and DA was +2,000'...I ran 131 mph with that combo.
Then after the last NMRA race I put on the carbon fiber bumper with the bellmouth, taller front tires 28" vs 24" for NMRA, removed the passenger seat, DA was -500' or so...first night I went four 10.05's, then I went from 255/60/15 to 275/60/15 on 11" rim, DA was around -500' and I 9.98, by the end of the night I got a 9.93, the next night I went out I got a 9.89 @ 136.85 mph 1.35 60'.

This is the shop in Sydney that was doing them. It's based off the VCM OTR intake for commodores/chevy SS. It's a no tune intake though so no real hp increase

That's the one. Very expensive though.

The ram air affect and much cooler air temps (compared to anything but a completely closed air box) does have some benefits. In the GTO/G8 world those have shown to make decent difference over even bigger regular location intakes.

That could be done, but in the NMRA class I run you can't have any forward facing hood scoops. Also during competition I put the stock bumper back on and feed from behind the grille to meet class rules.

A majority of the hood area is a low pressure zone, so a frontal scoop would not be too efficient at drawing air in unless you have one of those huge gaudy looking scoops like the older Subarus that have top mounted intercoolers.

The best place for a hood scoop would be at the rear of the engine by the cowl area, similar to what alot of the older cars that had shaker hoods. But unless you flip over the intake manifold to face backwards, there will be a lot of tubing with several hard bends that totally defeats the purpose of a ram air intake.

If you want a truly cold air intake, one has to plumb one to the fenderwell like the Cobra Jet, or if you want a cold air and ram intake, straight forward is the only choice.

yeah it was like $750AUD, roughly $500USD. Welcome to Australia's Mustang tax

I was talking about a big hood scoop. I don't think looks are a concern here. I didn't realize the OP was running a specific class where that wasn't allowed, though.
