Those ads are all form 64 1/2-65.
Actually some of those ads for 67 and later cars.

When the car was brand new and had No reputation whatsoever.
The Mustang started earning its reputation the day is was announced. The longest lines at the 1964-65 Worlds Fair was at the Ford pavilion. Why? The rides were new Mustangs.
The sales says is all.
1964 1/2 126,500
1965 559,500
1966 607,500

I would say the Mustang had quite the reputation early on. By the way the Mustang created the Pony car segment. They were the leader, everyone else followed.

By the way, sales for the S550 2015/19

Year
2019
55,365
2018 75,842
2017 81,866
2016 105,932
2015 122,349
441,354

No one thinks of a big block 67-70 fastback as a woman’s car.
Carroll did!

I'm not sure what some of you guys are attracted to, but I think some of the ads with women in them are actually marketing to men. ;)

Not sure if you were around back then but the original demographic for the Mustang was woman. Yes there were ads for men too but these ads were for woman. Back in 64-66 the big boy cars were big block Fairlane's and Galaxies'. I know, I had a 390FE Fairlane GTA.

Never knew that the S650 was supposed to be smaller and lighter. Also didn't know it was cancelled. Was there an announcement at the LA show about this?
There won’t be any announcements about something bad happening. it needs to be positive. Stringing people along. Especially the hardcore base, since s650 talk wasn’t something that’s been shouted from the rooftops to begin with.

we knew the new platform, that was smaller and lighter (the s550 was just a revised s197, so some weight issues were inherent as was necessary in beefing up chassis rigidity and strength - csusing the Mustang team to completely miss their weight targets) was going to debut around 2021-2022. Then it was pushed back. Then it was pushed back some more. Then Ford announced it was killing all cars except Mustang. then it announced everything on shared suv platforms - possibly hinting at the Mustangs survival being in name only - or the Mustang gets bigger as the shared CD6 platform may get the s650 moniker for the Mustang application. Then we don’t get updates on the s650 anymore at all. So it’s been a bit of a ride.

I realize that , I just glanced over them. Either way , once the 67s came out , even though the 390 cars were slugs , the cars were looked upon differently.
Murphy. Ford first thought of it as a car for all demographics. The term “secretary car.l was coined. But then they saw the real potential and who was really buying these things. Then the Camaro came out and the heat was on. The Mustang image over time was established early on through big block offerings and Carroll Shelby’s work. The whole “secretary car” took a serious backseat and the rebellious and free, rip snorting race car brand won out. And so it has been ever since. The Mustang 2 era came and the Mustang was unrecognizable for about 4 years, restored over time by the Fox platform.

we are hoping Ford wises up early as they’ve put their foot forward and it is widely recognized as being a misstep with the branding. The SUV Itself is great. Just badly needs its own identity.

and the Mustsng needs to keep its own identity as an accessible sports car.

marketing to men and women both are what sells all pony cars. Even Corvette. But marketing moms suv like it’s a Mustang is just dumb.

So you really blew up the whole platform?
Pericak:
I would’ve said in 2009 that this was an evolution of the platform. I sit here in front of you today and say it’s an all-new platform. There’s nothing on there, other than the wheelbase, that is consistent from the previous year. From the floorpan to the rails, there’s nothing that we have not changed.

I'm not convinced many outside Ford know what S650 is/was/might be.

The only time I've seen or heard anything "official" is some Linkedin profiles of Ford employees working on S650, and Chris Stevens (Ford designer for the '18+ and GT500) mentioning he's working on S650 on one of Stangmode's videos from last year's Woodward Dream Cruise. "Leaks" of dates being pushed back several times just come from "inside sources" and never from official announcements from Ford themselves. But its always been this way and I can't see it changing.

HOWEVER, given the furore Mach E has created within the Mustang community, Ford would do well to give us some good news to cling to with regards S550/S650. All we hear is "Mach E isn't replacing it the coupe". Fine. But I want to know the enthusiasts that work in Team Mustang are still pushing ahead. If that means running some camo'd prototypes around so that they can be "spied".....great......but I really think we need to see some evidence of "what's next".

That’s life in product planning. Future plans are never communicated outside of the company for two reasons
  1. Why give away information to your competitors? By the time a concept shows up at an auto show, you’ve got two years in the pocket, so competitors would be that much further behind if they start working on a competitor
  2. Plans change. A lot more than those of us who develop plans would like.
What Ford did say was
  • The next generation Mustang, including the hybrid version would be delayed until 2021 or 22.
  • They later said that instead of an all new in 2021-22, they would continue the current generation, with significant changes until 2026. At that point they would decide what would happen with Mustang (sorta like some other company saying their product would continue until 2023, at which point they would decide what would happen to it)
When I was supporting the Corvette team with intel, Tadge Juechter had weekly product development team meetings. Actually every product team has them. In Tadge’s meeting he would periodically show on the screen the LinkedIn pages and internal org chart pages of people who had Corvette or C8 on their profiles and he would tell his team leaders that they needed to tell those people to change their profiles or they’d be fired. Very effective.

And yet, the UAW contract for Ford highlighted:

https://eu.freep.com/story/money/ca...tments-dearborn-chicago-flat-rock/4127014002/

Flat Rock Assembly Plant — $250 million investment

  • All new Mustang, including derivatives

Given the contract is for 4 years, one assumes that mean an all new Mustang will be produced at Flat Rock by 2023 at the latest?

It's enough to make your head spin
Good point. Union contract agreements provide a lot of great intel. This was one we picked up on. Also, the Romeo plant, where Voodoo and Predator are hand built, is closing. Our assumption is that since it’s a hand assemble line, it can go just about anywhere. Other language in the agreement leads us to believe that it will be a US plant, not a Canadian plant (where Coyote is built). So my thinking is it will be Flat Rock. Just like some LT1, LT4, and LT5 engines where hand assembled at Bowling Green for Corvette owners who wanted to participate in their engine builds.

Other fun facts from union contracts...the Hamtramck plant will build electric pickups for Chevrolet, GMC, and (hold your hats, please) Hummer.

no. I didn’t “blow it up.” It’s common knowledge. The s550 started as an s197 and enough was changed along the way as to call it “new.” this happened with the Fox-4 as well and it also ended up heavier.

Words like changed, revised, upgraded, etc. aren’t saying much. There is a percentage of modification that has to take place to justify all new status. But it’s not clean sheet.

the s550 is awesome. After a few tweaks over a few years, it may be the best pony car chassis right now. The point was, they saved some decent goin with this approach and can go ahead with an optimum clean sheet whenever they want.

If I hadn’t purchased a 2019 CX-5 GTR last year as the family car I absolutely would be getting a Mach E.
