Regular unleaded vs Premium gas

I think it's funny they mentioned towing with a Mustang in the owners manual. Never seen a hitch on a Mustang, never seen a Mustang tow anything behind it.

I think it is because they don't want to put in print "spirited" or "racing" often. Towing is a good replacement.

Exactly. There are lots of recommendations in the manual people don't follow because they are not required. They only point out recommendations that back up their argument. They are quick to point out 91 recommended but totally gloss over the fact it states designed for 87. My ford focus has a gas cap that says BP fuel recommended. Does that mean anything? My car will only work properly on BP fuel...bs. recommended is a word in the category of maybe, is, might, who knows. It also states if towing... who tows trailers with a mustang gt?

Wut??!!! Who said anything about 87 not being ok to use? White paint is ok to use in your house, but would you really want to paint every surface in your house white.....unless you really really wanted to. Just because something is designed to minimally work, does not mean you can't do better.

Now if the manual said that 87 was recommended and said nothing about 91+ then your argument would be sound. As it is, you make yourself out to be sorta whiny. Just let it go. Use 87 all you want and just let others use 87, 89, 91, 93 etc as they please.

A: A bean counter figured out any issues that would arise from knock would be after the 3yr/36k warranty and only a couple would go bad before that.

They dont mention this knock issue because they are in the business of selling cheap affordable sports cars. They would have far less sales if 93 was required as people would do the math like you have and see how much extra they'd pay in gas.

I did this dataloging back when I was stock. As far as my engine being unhealthy I would have noticed I had a problem when I had it tuned. I run e85 now and all I see is negative knock.

I've replicated this before on a buddy's car with similar results.

Ford like all companies does not give a shit about you or me. All they want is us to sign our name on the line and make it through the warranty period.

Dyno graph from a stock 2011 GT, 6 speed (image is from 2010). Low and and top end aren't much different between 87 and 93. Mid range seems to have a pretty big difference between the ratings in the mid range, though.

Yes the real difference is low/midrange power. Top end is negligible, which is what people hang their hat on since that's were peak hp occurs and everyone likes to quote hp numbers

For the LTG 2.0L L4 turbo or the LT1 6.2L V8 engines, premium unleaded gasoline meeting ASTM specification D4814 with a posted octane rating of 93 is highly recommended for best performance and fuel economy. Unleaded gasoline with an octane rated as low as 87 can be used. Using unleaded gasoline rated below 93 octane, however, will lead to reduced acceleration and fuel economy. If knocking occurs, use a gasoline rated at 93 octane as soon as possible, otherwise, the engine could be damaged. If heavy knocking is heard when using gasoline with a 93 octane rating, the engine needs service.

There is a Mustang that requires premium. Guess Ford cares about GT350 owners
