NEVER Factory order a Mustang

Never had a problem with a factory ordered car & not just with the Blue Oval. I got all the options i wanted . Of course there is always the wait for delivery. I could always refuse the car upon delivery , if i did not like it. They would sell it to someone else. I have also purchased dealer stocked sport cars as well, both import & domestic. For me its a preference issue & the car being bought.This current Mustang took 12 weeks from order to delivery.

You know this forum has an order/price/tracking sub-forum with a nice thread called "Mustang Buying Basics and COTUS Guide" that explains the order process and shows you how to track your order, right?

I ordered my 60K GT350 in July and it was delivered in October. I used cotus to watch the build progress and even tracked the train it was on as it made it's way from Flat Rock to Atlanta.

slightly off topic, but how long was the time in transit from flat rock to atl?

Just think yourself lucky that you did not order a MY18, like I did, ordered in February, Ford cancelled the order in May, had to reorder a MY19 in June and choose a different colour as my original colour was no longer available, looking like this order is progressing well as it’s being built next week

My advice to anyone that's not very patient, has a time crunch, or is anxious to get their car: have a dealer do a nationwide search for the combo you ordered. Unless your order is extremely unique, chances are there's one sitting on a lot somewhere in the country and you're probably better off jumping on a plane and driving home or paying $500-1,000 more to have it shipped and having it in a few days instead of waiting a few months and pulling all your hair out in the meantime. Order experiences seem to be hit or miss. My car was mysteriously held at the factory for 2.5 weeks with no reason given, but otherwise was a smooth process because I made sure to order from a high volume Mustang dealer that was close to the factory so it went straight on a truck and avoided the slower rail cars. The dealer was 4 hours away from me but that drive was better than waiting 2-3 weeks extra for it to crawl along on a train to come the extra 300 miles.

I ordered mine in August 2016 IIRC, picked it up in November. Sure, it was a bit of a wait, but it was worth it to get the car I wanted.

This is fine if you're in the U.S., but may not be viable if you live elsewhere, as many of our members do. Here in Canada, the greatest number of Ford dealers are found in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. I live just outside Vancouver. None of the dealers in the area (2.5 million population) had a Royal Crimson GT Premium and none had one on order (mine is still the only one I've seen on the road). The nearest one equipped even close to what I wanted was 2500 miles away just outside Montreal. That's a 2500 mile drive back to the west coast through the Rocky Mountains, which any sane person with a brand new Mustang would only do from mid May to mid September. Shipping from that distance is not cheap, either. It cost me $2000 to have a classic car shipped from Toronto 15 years ago. Because of the currency exchange difference, buying in the U.S. is cost prohibitive. To buy a $50K Mustang in the U.S. will cost Canadians $65K plus tax. Unless Canadians are willing to accept a dealer stock car that probably won't be everything they want, factory ordering and a lot of patience is the way to go.

I ordered the day after New Year's Day in '15, had order documentation in hand when I left the dealer. I traded my '09 Bullitt, and despite it being winter the dealer wanted it to put in the showroom next to their 50th LE. A win-win since they got the car to spiff up the place and I gained a garage stall for a bit. COTUS kept me biting my nails in the interim, the car showed up, and I picked it up the first week of April just as the snow was disappearing.

Painless other than the wait, which drove me nuts since my '15 was the only Mustang I ordered and bought new.

I went the "find it on a lot somewhere route and the perfect car ended up being only a few hundred miles down the road so the dealer a few blocks away could do a transfer.

HOWEVER, as I'd only seen pictures of the car as the dealer had inventoried it the idiots agreed to a customer request to swap the GTPP wheels out with a non-GTPP car (presumably to get a sale).

That started a big fuss, and I ended up waiting a week and a half to buy a car I could actually see every day when I left & came home from work.

Ordered mine on 1/6/18, and it finally arrived 4/5/18. Only 3 months, which is fine. My problem was obsessively watching COTUS. The estimated delivery date kept changing, then came and went with no word. I would have been much happier if I'd just have waited blindly. COTUS gets your hopes up and dashes them repeatedly. I won't use it again.

Its naive and rude to imply that a custom order makes someone 'needy'. If i'm spending $40k+ for a car, its needs to be exactly what i want, not something similar to what i want. Not everything is available on a dealer lot. The options i chose for a 2018 were available only on a single car in the US, and it was 4500 miles away. That's right, 4500. I live in GA, and the car was in Hawaii. I chose to custom order instead of settle for a car that wasn't what i wanted.

2015-2017 had much less options than the 2018s. There were 0 in the country that matched what I wanted and were always missing at least 1 option. This is with 3-4 different dealerships checking nationwide inventory at different intervals since November of 2017.

Good for you. I ordered a 301A Lightning Blue PP2 with active exhaust and Recaros back in March 2018. Took delivery 5/22/2018. I have been searching for the exact same car since I placed the order with not one hit. No options were negotiable for me. I would still be waiting to get exactly what I wanted. And, I only had to drive 5 miles to pick it up.

Yeah definitely not as easy for those outside the U.S. My post was speaking about those here in the States.

Its unlikely that what i ordered will show up before my order, especially since Magneride cars are scarce. If the exact car DOES happen to show up before my order is delivered, I can still buy it and walk away from the order. If not, I know for sure i'll get one when my order is delivered. Sitting around waiting with my fingers crossed doesn't guarantee I'll find the car I want, an order does.

If you don't like the idea of doing a custom order, don't do it, nobody cares. Why should you care if somebody else does?

The discount was just a bit below invoice/Xplan plus the current $1500 incentive. It’s not even a crazy deal, go check the order forum, not sure why you want pics.
I didn’t negotiate when ordering beyond a handshake and that they’ll get me below Invoice (didn’t even do a down payment) - did it all the day I went to pick it up. Was pretty painless, plus they purchased my leased 2016 GT Premium for about $1200 above its residual, which took care of my last two payments and gave me about another $400 towards the car.

Having a trade discredits any pricing structure you may think you got. But as long as you're happy
