Is a GT too impractical for daily driving?

I always run my GT in sport mode and my MPG is still better than my Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.7l v8. I daily drive my GT all year here in the northeast and it's great. The only thing I did to improve it's every day driving capabilities was add some Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires to the car. The Michelin's work better than the stock summer tires in both the winter and summer. My only issue is due to the Roush/X pipe, the cold starts are pretty loud, so I do wish I had an active exhaust, but there are quieter options if you want to improve the sound but not be heard several blocks away.

I DD my GT. I have snow tires for the winter. I also have a truck for those severe winter days. I work in the Medical field and some days I have to go in during a blizzard. Mustangs only have 6 inches of ground clearance. 90% of you would just take the day off in a blizzard so you don’t need a 4x4.

Sometimes I don’t understand you guys. You worry about the gas bill but buy the premium model or GT sports car? You probably will get ripped off with some useless options and finance the lot that’s more than a mortgage. Pay higher insurance than most drivers because of the car (mine doubled). And then you worry about a few differences in fuel mileage?

The GT is a great daily driver. I think I prefer the GT as a daily to the GT350.

The thing is, when I had a GT I actually did drive it every single day. Now I have a beater and drive that when it's snowy, if it's supposed to hail, etc. That part was a little better with a GT, because I didn't worry about the car quite so much. So while I enjoy driving the GT350 more than I did the GT, I don't drive the GT350 every single day.

I get you love base models as you mentioned in other threads. I wouldn't call many of the features that come with the GT Premium useless. Luxury features are amazing if you can afford them and that's what you want. Of course, what people want in a car is subjective. For me, I'm used to luxury. I didn't want the GT to be an exception to that. ;)

We pay $139/month for full coverage and higher than normal limits on two cars (2018 GT Premium and 2018 Civic EX-T coupe). Payment really isn't that bad either with 0.9 financing for 60 months. My wife's car blows mine out of the water as far as MPG, but I still find the GT a somewhat practical DD. My DD is switching to the Bronco if they live up to the hype though. I'd rather not take the Mustang out in the winter or if there's a chance of hail.

I didn't really daily my 16 PP, but I did drive it to work around 1 time a week when I could. I drive 100 miles round trip for work (not for long!) but I never felt it to be an issue. But I'm sure over time I would have gotten tired with it. Now with the new 18, A10, smart and safe package I can't stay out the damn thing. I have driven my DD 1 time since the beginning of the month when I picked this car up. If you plan on daily the Mustang and can fit the smart and safe package in your budget, I would, it's totally worth it. Between the adaptive cruise, lane keep and auto wipers/high beams it basically makes driving effortlessly which is good for long, boring drives. The only time I start using the gas or the brake when I start my commute is towards the end when it hits a little stop and go but the adaptive cruise will work all the way down to 25, and will apply brakes when it's needed. Add that with the premium amenities and you have a comfortable touring car with stupid power when needed. I didn't even check my MPG until I was at the track Friday and an older man asked me what it got. So far out of 3k miles I have averaged 18.9 MPG. I'm also not slow on the pedal almost ever... If you were a bit more disciplined like me and your commute is mostly highway 22-24 would be pretty easy to average. The new auto sits around 2200rpm @ 80MPH with the 3.55 gears.

Oof 8mpg! :eyebulge: Well it's heavy traffic some days, but not THAT bad. I used to do a daily commute that took 2.5hrs instead of 45min without traffic. Right now my max would probably be 1hr in really bad traffic.

E85 will show ridiculously low gas mileage as it runs through the engine via a 4" fire hose. Any vehicle that can run both gas and E85, is like this. Basically cut your mileage in half. I believe you'll see more power, and it's a bit cheaper, so it's a trade off and I think doesn't balance out.

You'll have quiet mode, so neighbors are taken care of.

You can't use the Ecoboost power to it's full potential either, so buy whatever makes your soul happy.

BTW, a word of advice from a guy with 28 years of marriage in the can.....don't allow your fiance to influence your car purchasing decisions. She'll try to wield that power after the wedding, so put your foot down now!!

As a guy with 20 years with the same woman (not married in terms of certificate, but we think/treat our relationship as married - long story, but we have the same mindset), I also recommend not letting someone else tell you what you can and can't have as a vehicle. As long as there is food on the table and bills are paid, it's not anyone else's call. If it was, she and I would be both driving used bottom-rung civics.


To that, I also advise making her happy with her vehicle first*, she loves her 2012 Camry XLE V6 that rolled over to 100K this week. Because of that, I've since bought a motorcycle, sold it to buy another motorcycle (currently still have it), traded in my truck for a bigger truck then traded it for a Sequoia and about to trade it for a 2019 Mustang GT Prem.

*not all relationships are the same. If you have any reservations *at all*, then don't get involved in something that will take years to pay off; things can sour quickly and ruined credit takes a while to fix.

It’s not absolute. The GT is overpriced so I’d rather get a Stingray. The financing and longer term better resale but not a DD. But 100 feet from me is a new ZL1 but without the aero package which was on the last one I looked at. The sticker says 76 grand or the same price as my Vette. But almost half a Z06 up here. I could go that way. Just saying. Plus this one looks normal so I could drive it more. I still have the Mustang as my real DD and a Buick Enclave when I need to haul people.


Also, back in the mid-eighties I almost bought a Jaguar XJS V12 on a 1500 a month lease for 3.5 years or something like that. I saw one on Monday and regretted never getting that. I’m still a car guy at heart!

Gas is a wash. Regular in the GT, premium in the EB. You only come out ahead on the V6, which they don't make anymore.

I never understood the thought process of buying a brand new car and NOT daily driving it. These cars will NEVER reach any status as the prior 50-70’s Muscle Car era... no need to mothball them.

Don’t let anyone else decide what you will buy! If you’re living an upscale, snot nosed, elitist, prissy-like neighborhood - then all the more reasons to not only buy a Mustang, but one with active exhaust! If you can’t deal with the fact of what ANYONE will think of you if you’re buying and driving a Mustang in such a neighborhood, then time to re-evaluate yourself and move... or be a sheeple like the rest of your neighborhood herd.

A Mustang at any option level, makes a great daily driver - in all weather too. Those who disagree either have never owned more than ONE Mustang and don’t know how to operate/drive/enjoy a pretty raw rear wheel drive car equipped with a decent drivetrain. A Mustang was NEVER designed to be a Bentley, BMW or Benz... so if you’re looking for the feeling of sitting on your fluffy living room couch with cargo capacity of a van, and could get stuck in the snow if not using proper seasonal tires and common sense, DON’T consider or buy a Mustang.

I at least leave my garage door closed when I start my Mustang at 6 am, then after about 7-8 seconds, I open it. My tune takes care of the wicked loud idle that comes with the stock tune.

I don't daily drive mine and I average about 18.5 mpg with 3.73 gears and actually driving pretty civil. City driving kills these cars on gas mileage. They're fine on the highway. I could daily drive my Mustang, but it's nice to have a secondary car to drive when gas prices start getting outrageous on 93 octane, or I want to carry more than just 1 passenger when I go out with friends.
