So I have a 18 mustang gt on order (10 speed) how ever I will be driving 40 miles each way to work now in Chicago . The gas truly isn't my concern. I truly only have one and that's I take my 80 pound shepherd to the dog park weekly. Can this be done in the mustang?

The only other car I am considering is a 16 Audi S3 which is a nice little 4 door and with a tune does 0-60 same as the mustang. Just doesn't have the top end .
Forget about the ouwee, and roll with the mustang.:lol::ford:

I’ve owned both Audi’s and VWs. Loved them both. In fact, I traded my ā€˜13 GTI for my current Mustang GT, which I currently love. I’m keeping my Mustang for a while. If I were to trade it, it would be for a better Mustang or S4/S5. Consider getting a 4 door beater for practicality and the Mustang as your baby. My beater is a Nissan Rogue (although once in a very blue moon the dog gets a ride in the Mustang)

It's going to be hard to fit a big dog in the Mustang. You can lay the rear seats down, but still... Lots of plastic for dog nails to scratch too, but that's true of the Audi as well.

I'd get the Audi. 4 doors is better for your needs. IMHO.

It’s a used 2016 Audi S3 prestige 10k miles for 38k the thing that worries me is it looks like the resale value is worse then the mustang . The 18 gt premium I ordered is 42k and comes with CarPlay and better gauges etc

Idk I like the Audi but my only reason for a backseat is my dog nothing else. Snow tires on mustang I would be fine . The s3 is a fun little car though and a tuned one o think will beat the new gt to 0-60
For the money, another option would be a 2018 Golf R. Same engine, DSG and AWD of the Audi, adjustable suspension, digital gauge cluster and Apple Car Play with a 6yr/72k warranty for around $40k. With a tune it will be just as quick as the GT/10speed and get better MPG and have a lot more practicality. Just won't look/sound as cool.

BTW, we have a 2015 Audi A3 convertible. No issues at all, fantastic build quality and only needs scheduled maintenance every 10k or once a year, which cost under $200.

No contest. Your use case requires practical access to the boot and plenty of space. Buy a Mercedes estate or bmw 5 series touring.
Since you live in America and have the Raptor available with very cheap gas then why not buy one of them. Perfect for hauling your dog. You won’t even get hairs and mud in the cabin.

Raptors are stupid pricey. New ones go for around $70k here. I can't even find a couple year old one for a decent price. For the cost of a Mustang GT, you may be able to find an older higher mileage Raptor, but it isn't a good value.

Meh, I've owned VWs for a while now, and I think the whole "cost of German cars" talk is blown out of proportion.

Recent VW/Audi vehicles (2013+) are actually quite reliable. Their biggest issue is typically fit & finish (vibrations and creaking panels), which all auto manufacturers are fighting with as more and more components are made of plastics/composites.

My current VW has basically been worry free - my personal experience with vehicles has proven that Ford and Nissan have been the least reliable (it wouldn't stop me from buying either, but goes to show how every manufacturer can have issues).

To answer the OPs question - I'd probably buy the Mustang and set it up to accommodate the pup. I'm in a similar boat, albeit with a young kid instead of a dog. I'm on the fence between a Mustang and a A5 Sportback. It boils down to how well my kid will be able to negotiate the two door setup and buckle herself in. Her preference of backseat is definitely with the Mustang, so I likely know what my decision will be.

To actually answer the question, it can be done, but really depends on how obsessive you are over your car. I have a 72lb Boxer mix, cart him to daycare 2-3x/week. Fits just fine in the back seat. The passenger seat slides far enough forward and tilts well enough that he has no problem getting in or out. I got the Amazon Basics waterproof seat cover (~$20) to protect the seat, fits almost perfectly, the straps tuck behind and under the seat. I just take it off when not in use.

However, hair gets everywhere when driving, so a lot of carpet/rear shelf brushing is required and the rear shelf is not very easy to clean. My car is just a V6 DD, so I'm not anal about it. If I had paid for more it the hair getting everywhere might bother me more as the rear is almost entirely carpeted it and thus not easy to clean.

Go with the Mustang. Even if something does go wrong, it's cheaper to fix. The Audi is just like any German car. They make great lease cars, but not great to own unless you have an extended warranty.

Go with a S5!
+1

I was debating a used S5 or a new GT. Ended up going new GT for longterm reasons, but the S5 is one hell of a car

My parents have a 120lbs hound mix rescue.
He rides just fine in the passenger seat of the Mustang with his head out the window.
I just lay a blanket down and he jumps right in.

People talking about maint or repair costs are funny.

4/50k btb, 5/60 powertrain. Shouldn't be paying for anything for some time, even buying used.

The 4cyl turbo cars are generally reliable. General maintenance costs are low considering what they can do, DSG service can be 250-400 depending on dealer.

And whoever considers a $20 coil pack to be a deciding factor as to if you buy a car or not is out of their mind. You can literally change them in 5 min, $20 and most will last the life of the car...
I agree with all of this here but I do have to say to service just about anything except for coils, oil, and fluids, the fact that you have to take off the front clip is pretty annoying. But it is what it is.

Let's be fair though, the B8 1.8L turbos were terrible. The 2.0 is way better. That supercharged 3.0L in the S4 and S5 is pretty stout and can take 450 RWHP without sneezing at it. The dual clutch trans doesn't like anymore than that though. I'm a huge fan of B8.5 S4's.

Wife drives an 08 VW Jetta. Car is stout. 225k miles, nothing has broke or been repaired. Drives the same as when we purchased it with 30k mi. Very agile, quick enough, and reliable. Definitely surprised us, was just supposed to be a car used to commute to work, 8 years later and it's still running strong.
