Long time M car guy: 01 m3, 05 m3, 06 m5, 08 m6, 11 m3, and 15 m3. Loved all the M cars until the F80. Its big, sounds like crap, fake v8 noise in the cabin, numb steering, and lacks soul. Had it for 5 months, then had to decide to jump back to an E9x M3 or step up to a 911. Moved to a 991.1 GTS, car is fantastic. But its a lot of money and I could probably get 95% of the fun for 50% of the cost :)

Which leads me to the GT350. I've followed the GT350 before it launched. Its the M3 BMW never built. Based on research and reviews, I have a pretty good idea this car would work. Although I've never owned a Ford my entire life, especially a Mustang :)

I'm trying to find one to drive, and doing some research in the meantime. I'm also looking to buy used vs. new.

Questions

Why so many low mileage 16/17 cars? Plenty with under 2k miles.

What's up with the recall? I've read many threads. I followed the link for the VIN. I enter the VIN in the tool. But how can I tell if the car has had the recall "fixed"? Or better yet, is there a way to tell the build date?

16 vs. 17: a nice 16 can be had for about $47k. 17's start at $50k used, even a few new ones out for $55k. I've read about the packages, etc. However I'm worried about the engine oil issue w the 16. I like how the 17 is optioned - I get the conv pack, and has everything I want. For $3k diff maybe just go w a 17?

Recaro: LOVE the look of the recaro, love suede. However this is my only car and DD. Living in the south, cooled seats are sure nice. I know I need to sit in them. Some reviews said the recoaro's are tight.

Resale: I take resale into account when I buy a car. My hunch would be around 10% depreciation per year?

Warranty is 4/50k right? I've seen a few ads stating "special Ford 1 year warranty". I wonder if that's for the recall issue?

Maintenance: Any major expenses? For example, on my E46 M3 a valve adjustment was needed for $1200. On the E90 M3 $2500 engine repairs at 60k miles.

That's it for now. I'm trying to get my questions answered via search. Thanks.

I have a 2016 with the track pack. Recaro seats, trans and diff coolers, base interior. Car is great to drive, but does have some rattles and body panel alignment issues (rear bumper). Base interior doesn’t look the nicest, but is actually extremely functional and perfect for me. Has a USB port in the center console for music on a thumb drive, another port under the radio for phone, great voice recognition for making calls with a paired phone, steering wheel controls make it easy to adjust radio stations and volume. It works great even if it looks a little “low rent”

I’m 5’ 10’, 190 lbs, and fit in the Recaro seats just fine. I’m in CA where it can get hot but it’s pretty dry and I find the seats pretty easy to deal with. Back does get sweaty though. My dad drove with me back from Oklahoma where I bought my car and we were both very comfortable. The seats are very well bolstered, but to me they are one of the reasons to get the car. Really makes it feel special.

Car is pretty big and heavy, but does a very good job masking it’s weight. Engine is pretty crazy and makes the car feel special whenever you can get on it a bit. It can be very tame in normal mode with the quiet exhaust, and quite loud and boisterous when you open the pipes. Overall I really love the car. 26,000 miles on mine and some burning oil, but no major problems.

I’d recommend spending the money to get what you really want. No point trying to save a few grand and then always regretting it.

Looking at your requirements, especially the depreciation aspect, you may want to first let the GT500 introduction play out. Prices may drop a bit. There will be plenty low mileage cars to choose from for years.

You may see a greater range of prices for ‘16’s due to fact that there was a base model vs ‘17 where all cars were equipped with coolers. ‘17 cars basically only had two options that differed in the seats, otherwise very similarly equipped. I waited for a ‘17 because as others have said, the Recaro’s are a big part of this car. A ‘16 could not be configured with the Recaros and electronics package. I also like the bigger spoiler on all ‘17’s. One other thing I can think of is the running change to the canister oil filter during the ‘17 model run ( it sure what month that change took place). I don’t think that is a deal breaker but an additional thing to consider. I got mine in May of ‘17 after the filter change and any cars made after the recall production/sale stoppage have the updated oil cooler lines. Best of luck with the search. Like you, I was an import guy prior and was coming out of 15 years of 911 ownership. The Shelby is amazing!

All built in 17 have the new cannister style oil filter right? Also, what was the date for the Oil Line Recall correction on new builds? Thanks.

Incorrect. Early 17s were built with the old, metal can filter. Changed over mid year. I do not recall when it switched, but I think it was in early Sept. June-Aug 17s will have the old style. :ford:

I think a lot of people bought on impulse and because of the hype of the limited production of the car... when people were seeing $10K ADM's, I saw people jumping in at $5K over because they thought it was a deal. Another (my brother, for example) was pretty convinced that the car would hold it's value or even go up because of the FPC and the demand of the car back in '16 and early '17.

Then when the '16 non-track pack debacle happened AND the oil recall in early 2017, it seemed like the market tanked about then. I started seeing deals and MSRP deals (and even some under MSRP deals) all over that I never expected to see so soon. The people that bought on hype and loved having a car that was hard to get now became easily obtainable and the hype was over. It seemed like we started seeing a large amount of cars (comparatively speaking) being traded and sold (dumped) by mid-2017.

I still believe that this car is unique enough, especially the R, to hold a special place in Mustang history. No matter what they do to the new GT500, it won't have the flat plane crank and the amazing looks that the GT350 and GT350R have.

And just be thankful you didn't jump in on a standard GT350 for $10K over (or similar) back in 2016 or early 2017! I couldn't imagine looking at the market right now and taking that kind of hit!

Are there a lot of 16/17 cars for sale? I have only seen one for sale in my area. I'm not sure why people would sell them. I considered selling mine when the cooler fiasco came up. That doesn't apply to 17s though. If I had to speculate a lot of the traditional Mustang guys are straight line people and this isn't a straight line car.

I personally would choose a 17 due to the coolers.

10% per year seems low to me and depreciation isn't linear. I think they fall quickly at first and then stabilize due to low numbers built and the fact that they are "special". Depreciation is high if you plan to buy new and sell in 2-3 years but not bad if you keep the car longer or buy used. I realize this remains to be seen, but I'm forming this opinion based on similar past Ford products.

Warranty is 3/36,000 covering everything and 5/60,000 on the powertrain.

Fords don't have expensive maintenance like that. Another reason some people may have sold their GT350s is they are worried about the longevity of the engines. I have some concerns but I can't think of any reason the engine wouldn't last 200,000 miles without repairs. Yes there are exceptions, but I wouldn't plan for early repairs like Porsche owners might have to.

GT350s built after 11/22/16 have the new, canister type oil filter.

The early Sept. '16 you are probably thinking of is the delineation point for the oil cooler hose recall.

A member on here just bought a 2017 with about 7K miles for $49K. Sticker was $60K. That's about a 20% hit for someone, and if they paid an ADM, they lost their ass.

Just to clarify, for 2017 there is a base model; it is equivalent to a '15/16 Track Pack. On top of this were the 2 options which add the upgraded electronics, one keeps the Recaros and the other replaces them.

I was in the market for a used 991. The GT350 matches performance for not only much less initial purchase price but also operational costs. I ordered in early 2015 and 2016 picked the car up in JAN16. About a year into ownership I sold the car looking for an R but also looked at 991 used GT3 RS , GT4 and C7 GS. For much less the R was it. I think as many have mentioned is lots of people buy to have the latest and greats. Others bought a car expecting something else. Use that to your advantage when purchasing. The 16 GT350 with TP or 17/18 MY will amaze you and the R will blow your socks off! It did for me.

Yeah I thought any 350 with a 17 BUILD date had the new canister. Thanks!
