Hi all,

I'm about to go FI so I'm looking at upgrading my OPG and CS. I pretty much decided on TSS for those. My question is since I am upgrading those, is there a need to also upgrade the balancer or is just a waste of $400+ ?

Just looking to save some $$$ if I don't need the balancer.

Thanks!

I left the stock balancer on mine. You can upgrade that later if you want.

Why risk it? I asked myself the same question. If you are spending $1000 and replacing the bolt anyway it would be 0 extra labor to swap now. Do it right the first time.

That's what I'm trying to gage. Every thread or article that I've read refers to the additional harmonic load that the higher power or rpms place on the OPG is related to stock balancer and stock powdered metal OPGs. If the OPG is replaced, that should address the root cause right?

Isnt the problem because the stock balancer is balanced at 7000 rpm and when you go above that rpm then the stock balancer starts to resonate and the OPG gears cant take that stress? I would think that doing the balancer would net the same results am i wrong? Ive been wondering what route i want to go as well and ive heard both sides but no definitive answer.

My understanding is the issue is multifactorial. One the stock cast gear is more brittle and wants to splinter with these loads, this is exacerbated with the the additional loads and harmonics of the faster acceleration of FI (particularly Turbo's as they spool). Some argue the added drag/flex of driving the SC on the snout of the crank makes its more prone as well.

Its whatever you are comfortable with, some people run around with 700hp and completely stock everything. I figured while I'm there do it right, I dont want to do it again if I can avoid it. Look around and you'll find Dampners cheaper I think I paid $380 shipped. I saw a roman one for $275 the other day.

The balancer is a nice upgrade but no where near as critical as the OP gears and lower crankshaft gear. The failure of either one of those parts can cost you a complete engine, on the other hand balancer failures, even stock are unheard of.

Let us know how we can help, we have a great deal on the OP gear and Crankshaft sprocket for just $518 HERE, both of which carry a lifetime warranty and have never had a single failure, they are also used by 2014 NMRA Coyote Modified Champion,2015 NMRA Coyote Modified Champion,2015 NMRA Renegade Champion, 2016 NMRA Coyote Modified Record Holder ,Worlds Fastest 5.0 Coyote and First in the 6's!!

Thanks for the clarification. That was my initial suspicion. I was thinking that if the OPG was upgraded to handle the additional stress/harmonics, then changing out the stock balancer might not be necessary because even though something like an ATI has tighter tolerances if anything it would just add a measure of additional safety as it's rare for the balancer to give out.

Just to chime in, I am doing the exact same at the moment, about to put my power adder on next month.

I went for the Boundary OPG, TSS Crank Sprocket and the ARP balancer bolt....$429 from Beefcake Racing.

Engine should be solid with that set up, not concerned with replacing the balancer.

With an aftermarket balancer you can still break the OPG ask me how I know:headbonk: But with stock balancer and billet OPG and TG you will not break them and balancer will not fail as well. So no you don't need it. However keep in mind with forced induction and RPM the stock balancer will not provide the torsional vibration dampening that an ATI damper can. Wouldn't you want your motor under full song to be as vibration free as possible even if it isn't going to break something without it will cause extra stresses and wear. Most people at the point of doing OPG throw the extra $400 at it and since a damper needs to go back on, so why put the stock one back on when you can have a better one providing less vibration on the front of the crank.

That's great that your gears have a lifetime warranty but I must ask a few questions.
1) who's lifetime?
2) let's say I buy your gears and they do break, what do you cover with that lifetime warranty? Just the gears? After all stock ones break and the motor is toast. We purchase your gears to eliminate that possibility, but anything can happen. So if I purchase your gears and they break are you guys going to pay to replace my engine as is before total loss condition?
