For me it's easier (and more fun) to just install the coolers. Then I know that I get what I need, installed the way I want it. There is not a single thing, other than the lack of coolers, wrong with my 350.

Makes sense!

I didn't pay anything additional except for the difference between the 16 and 17 (although I grabbed an R this time).
I paid MSRP. If I got that in trade and paid MRSP for a '17 R, I might consider...for half a second...then jump on it!

Exactly, Same story here, i would consider trading if i could get my paid MSRP and wouldn't mind paying difference for a '17.

The other thing is, my car hasn't hit limp mode thus far, so i've got no case with Ford.

I purposely didn't push the car to hard as to not hit limp mode. Maybe that was my mistake.

Putting faith in SA right now and hoping they have a complete kit out soon.

What is your and others opinion here about a novice/intermediate mechanic tackling this project. Is it too much for someone who has never done it? Or is it fairly straightforward and can be done if one takes their time?

Hey Jason,
I think it depends on your confidence level.

There's some removal of body peices, plumbing, wiring, and most importantly designing the install. We don't have a complete 'plug and play" kit at this time and what we do have seems to be incomplete with useless parts included and no instructions provided...

I'm hoping Shelby American will be offering their kit sooner rather than later and I will use that to finalize my plans. I do not think I will tackle this entire project myself as I am leaning towards tapping the transmission case as 16Kobra has.

I'll post what I come up with.

Good luck with your project:cheers:

Thanks, same here, if Shelby America comes up with a complete kit with decent instructions, I'd like to try it myself and learn some new things. Doesn't hurt to get to know the car better, especially since I intend to track it.

It's a rather simple project if you're approaching it with a strict function over form mentality. My install was done well and very functional, but it's not for a car show. All my access was done through the passenger front wheel well. I would say I'm a novice/intermediate mechanic as well, with exceptional mechanical ability and it was never difficult.

I don't know if you would have any trouble or not, but I would hesitate to recommend this project to anyone.

The lines are filled with flammable fluid and the hot exhaust will be very near by. I'm assuming you will be tracking the car since you want the cooler. Ford Performance won't be offering any instructions.

HOWEVER...., I would say IMO it's an easy project if you buy the trans and the cooler. Mostly just time consuming. The biggest thing for a novice will be making sure everything is labeled and plenty of photos and notes taken during disassembly so it goes back together correctly. Also finding out the torque specs and making sure fasteners are torqued. If you don't work on cars you might need some extra jack stands or other tools, but that will be cheap compared to the price of paying someone to do it for you. I would also recommend (for most people) a second set of hands to help lift the transmission into place. It can be done solo with a jack, but that's not always the easiest thing in the world.

If you plan to just get the cooler and a separate pump and then make up your own lines, that's a much higher level of difficulty due to the wiring, brackets, making up your own custom lines, routing the lines, etc.

Hey Hack,
You make a compelling argument for the tranny swap...I keep going back and forth with always falling back on a couple points: 1) my existing transmission is stock to the car and will perform as advertised with the cooler & 2) I really don't want to fork over more $$ to Ford..

Could you offer up some of the factors for you in deciding on the full tranny swap?

Thanks in advance

Fellas....why the good fuck do you guys not give your cars back...I did. It takes a bit of effort and some intelligence and research (ie, arguing the marketing and salesmanship of the car isn't in line with the product we bought).

In Canada - we can use CAMVAP - in America I believe you all have Lemon laws.

142 pages and I am not sure anyone except myself and Swedensky have done anything about it.
it would take time, which the time it would take is not cost-justified for me.

Not trying to sound pompous, but every hour that i spend during a work week dealing with this, vs. working takes $250 out of my pocket.

couple that with eating the thousands of dollars in aftermarket parts, just to start over? Even if it was a swap with FoMoCo? Nope!

Ford has cemented just how impossible they are to deal with in my mind. I will NEVER think of Ford as a manufacturer that caters to anyone other than the base focus/base f150 demographic.

I will not buy anything from them outside of MAYBE that class of vehicle.

Instead of buying a continental and a raptor this year, I opted to buy a vintage beater pickup for hauling duties and a pretty pricey Mercedes G class.

Plus, My car runs well and I like it.

juice ain't worth the squeeze.

Fair enough bro!

Just thought I would put it out there for the guys that are in a bind - a couple guys have gone against Ford and won due to the nonsensical marketing that was done for this car.

I brought it up during my consult with my lemon law lawyer. According to him it would be tough sell under my state's lemon law. He said if went limp during normal driving I would have a case, but other than that it would be a shaky argument.

Plus, I bought the car knowing it needed the coolers so I can't really blame Ford for that. What I do blame Ford for is how long it has taken to get them out and how they've bungled the roll out of them. Oh yeah, there is obviously no diff cooler option from FP/Ford and it doesn't look like there will be one from them either.

But, no point in debating this over and over. We now know our options and to what level FP/Ford is willing to help with the situation. It is definitely not ideal, but it is what is and I'll proceed from here.
