Coming from a 2013 3.7L w/2.73 gears, now I have a 2016 5.0 w/3.73 gears....

I thought I knew the MT82 well, I had driven one for about 50,000 miles in all condition. But after buying this GTPP a week ago, it seems a lot different and I'm not sure what's normal.

2013 MT82 Mods:
  • Red Steeda Shifter Base Bushing

2016 MT82 Mods:
  • Whiteline Positive Shift Transmission Mount Bushing Insert but I have not installed it
  • Steeda Clutch Spring

My shifts seem very jerky, especially 1-2, 2-3. The Steeda spring helped me feel the clutch grab quite a bit, but I'm having a hard time finding the sweet spot for a smooth transition, if there is one. I can baby the clutch to get a smooth shift, but I should be able to be faster with my feet. I'd say for city driving I'm shifting around 2k RPMs.

The other thing I've noticed is how clunky the linkage sounds with nearly every shift. It sounds like it's going to fall apart. The thud when shifting into first is very notable. Also, when shifting into first coming to a stop, I can hear the syncros spin up.

Is this normal? Any tips?

I think its normal, I have the same issue 1-2 and I have been driving sticks for over 35yrs....:ford:

To fix the "clunk" swap out your trans fluid for something a bit better, I went with Royal Purple and it mitigates the clunk quite a bit.

I would try one of the shifter brackets/bushings. The Steeda one looks good. I actually went with the Energy Suspension replacement bushing. It works very well at improving shifter feels and consistency, and is only $14. This car does have some clunks, most of it is rear driveline, though.

The other thing is try to have a little patience shifting. You may need to slow down how fast you're trying to shift when just driving around town. Don't force it, just let the shifter glide in by applying steady pressure. It'll drop in when it's ready. Also, the trans gets a lot smoother with miles. I have 34k on mine and it's way, way smoother than new. The bushing definitely helped.

Many folks have reported significant improvement with switching to BG Syncroshift II. I may do this myself before it gets cold.

I already have the Whiteline, do you think I need the Steeda bushing as well? It doesn't seem to be as popular with the S550 as it was with the S197.

NO you won't. The Whiteline (like Steeda) will prevent, for the most part, lock outs shifting when under WOT. You will get a little more NVH with it however because it limits the trans from flexing/moving.
The two best things you can do (yes I know its money) is:
1) Change out the fluid - BG, RP, and the Amsoil mixture are all good options.
2) The factory shifter is junk. Put in a MGW and you will fall in love with the MT82. If going boosted down the road consider a 6060 swap. For NA the MT82 will hold just fine.

Eh that's excessive. The bushing fixed my v6, ither than notchy shifts it's not that bad

No, you said you have the trans mount bushing (which I honestly wouldn't recommend installing unless you like hearing EVERYTHING in the transmission). The shifter bracket constrains the shifter tail to the body of the car. It has a ridiculously soft EPDM rubber bushing inside the stamped bracket. Replacing that bushing with one like the Energy Suspension one, or the whole Steeda bracket improves shifting substantially.

I think the OP is primarily talking about the "jerk" - which these parts being mentioned won't help much. It is more of the engagement/disengagement of the clutch - not from the movement of the trans.

I picked up a PP and notice the same thing.

I just let it jerk. I can smoothen out the shifts when just driving around, but I want my stock clutch to last. lol

You can get smooth shifts w/o the jerk when just driving around town and w/o slipping the clutch, just requires a little patience with this transmission and the engine's rev hang.

I will reiterate that everything does 'break-in' and get smoother after a few thousand miles. I'm at 34k now. It's still a notchy trans/shifter when cold, but it used to be notchy almost all the time when new, even when hot.

We just run the Barton shifter and oem Bushings, it's has less NVH than the factory buzz box shifter. Clutch pedal takes some getting used to, with the factory spring, no spring or someone else's spring. Fluid helps with shifting and seems to dampen some NVH. The stock shifter is horrible in our opinion. As others have stated, it shifts fine if you are patient but once you change shifters you'll understand.

As far as hearing the transmission the fluid change helps that especially when down shifting. BG allows the Syncro to bite and it slides right in.....

Going to try the Energy Suspension bushing since it's so cheap. May go with the Boomba bracket if I don't like it. Hopefully the jerkiness does get better with time - perhaps that's why I remember my 2013 being much smoother

You'll get smoother once the car gets broken in. When I first got my car I felt like I was just learning how to drive stick again with how jerky my take-off's were and some of my around town gear changes. The clutch feel had a "lump" of engagement in it. Around 800 miles that went away and I've got it figured out.

Now, I am by no means an expert in manual driving, novice at best. But around town when I'm up shifting, I usually pause and let the RPM's start to fall and let the clutch out without feeding it throttle. That gives the smoothest shift. If I try to drive it like my BMW where I input throttle as I let the clutch out, it jerks into the next gear.

I think the issue I have is the high engagement.

I have found that I have to be smooth with the clutch the entire travel where most of my cars I could get about 80% out and let the clutch out the rest of the way quickly, doesn't work in these cars.

Ecoboost PP MT82 here as well - same thing. learning how to shift from 1-2 and 2-3 has been as struggle, even with having driven plenty of manuals before. Gets smoother with time for sure, and I'm about to put BG SyncroShift II and the Steeda Spring Clutch Assist in so hopefully that helps too :)
