Car has a cat-back exhaust, Roush CAI, and a tune that I am managing with SCT X4 tuner. I was running the 91 Tune (I'm in CA and 91 is the best we have) with no issues.. ran good. Decided to give the E30 tune a shot - put 4 gallons of E85 (minimum 70% according to label at pump) in the tank with 10 gallons of 91, and installed the E30 tune. Today on my 3rd day of driving it with the tune, I was going to work this morning (cool air, low 70's), and on one of my acceleration runs (I was data logging at the time so I could send it to the tuner to fine-tune it), it sputtered really bad and lost a lot of power .. I immediately let off the gas .. the check engine light was flashing/blinking at me .. after maybe 20-30 seconds, the light went off, and the engine smoothed back out. I completed the data log, and then checked to see if I could retrieve a code, but no luck.

On my way home from work (it was warmer - mid/high 90's), I got on the gas again at one point, and the same thing happened .. sputter at higher RPM (about 4800-5000 or so) and loss of power. Check engine light stayed on this time (I was not data logging) - code was P0301 - cylinder 1 misfire. engine smoothed out again after about 20 seconds.. got home, and per the tuner, I checked my plugs for proper gap - they were all at .028, where he said they should be. Sent him a copy of the data log file from the morning run and he couldn't conclude what happened... said he could turn the boost way down if I wanted. I let him know I was a little concerned about damaging the engine in my brand new car - his response was "put it back to stock".. I was hoping for a bit more assistance in figuring out what the issue was here... of course, I am nervous about damaging the engine in my 2 month old car, and I'm trusting my tuner to sell me a tune that will improve performance but not blow up my engine .. is that too much to ask?

I still have about 1/3 tank of E30 - is it ok to put it back to a stock tune with that in the tank? If the engine is about to blow, I want to have it on the stock tune if that happens.

Go with tune+! Adam is great!
I've heard..
But I already had the SCT X4, and I paid $150 for 2 tune files which also adjusted the transmission shift firmness from another notable tuner
if I were to change -
$500 for a new tuner plus $300 for the tune, and then $150 more for the transmission adjustment tune too ... almost a grand. That's a lot of money, not to mention, I've heard he is not the nicest/friendliest person to work with. As far as I'm concerned, the customer service is just as important (if not more) than the product itself. I don't want to spend that kind of money to deal with someone who is known as a jerk (and I'm not speaking from any personal experience, just what I've seen/read from other people's interactions)

Who tunes your car now? You said sctx4 but I didn't see where the tuner was mentioned

Also maybe Adam will reply or give him a shout, even if you aren't a customer he's real good at answering questions. Main reason why I'm now his customer, had 3 tuners before him. One was the SCT

I had Torries tune when I first bought the car, I had the 93 and not the e30. Torrie was great to deal with. I am happier with my AP and Adam though, also maybe you wrote it, but do you have an aftermarket fmic? Not supposed to run e30 without it

He's a little 'short' with some of his responses (which I can attribute to just being busy and not having the luxury of being able to chit-chat with everyone), but his response of "go back to stock" to shut me down kinda put me off.

I am not running an aftermarket IC yet (I have one on order through Levels).. but this morning, the air temps were nice and cool (high 60's/low 70's), and even if the charge temp was a little on the high side, I don't see why that would have caused a misfire.. ?

You tried running E30 on the stock IC, and yet you get put off when told to go back to stock? :headbonk:

There was no correlation made to the IC and E30 when he advised me of that - and - how would the stock IC be related to a misfire issue?

Can you tell what your charge air temps were towards the end of the datalog?

Also, I wouldn't go back to the factory tune with that much E85 in the tank. Even if you filled up the rest with 91 I think you'd be around 16-17 percent ethanol, and the factory tune is only good for up to E15. I would stay on the E30 tune and take it real easy (stay out of boost as much as possible). Then once you get down to about a quarter tank or lower fill it up with 91 and you can switch back to the factory tune if you want.

Did you test the ethanol content of the E85? Your mix could be off. You really should test the E85 so you know more specifically how much to put in.

Oh man that sucks. Hope u get it sorted out.. I would be upset to if my tuner just said put it back to stock. Did he mentioned that go to stock for the meanwhile while he figures out your data log?

Well Adam would of told u straight up, don't run e30 without a catch can an aftermarket fmic and I think the plugs. Your pushing the car past its limits, that thing isn't even good on 93 and e30 is a whole other game. Like I said before, pm Adam. Don't be scared about what you hear about him. He's blunt and brash, but he will make your car float on clouds and put a smile each and every time u sit in that seat!!! That's all that matters. See what he tells you, and maybe u can switch at some point like I did. More for the Accesport than anything with torrie personally, but Adams tune is just the cherry on top!

Charge temp was never above 120-125. No, didn't test the ethanol content. Thanks for the info, I'll ride it out .. With how much I drive, tank will be empty by Friday morning. And no, he didn't say anything else...
