Is acoustic stuffing a good idea for this box? $20 a solid price?
If your speakers require more air space than the zenclosures box provides...

Welcome to the strange world of acoustics.

Stuffing increases volume by maybe 15%, so it is not really enough to change the SPL response. However, it is more effective at damping mid/high frequency internal traveling waves, and whether for a sealed or ported box. This is a good benefit to lower acoustic harmonic distortion.

Pink insulation is about the same effectiveness, but nastier stuff to put in there. OC703 has an even wider bandwidth, but impossible to come by in small quantities.

So stick with pillow stuffing, and don't fluff it up before installing it. If your woofer voice coil is exposed, cut and place a piece of cloth (old T-shirt) behind the woofer magnet to keep fibers out of the gap.

I put some in my Shaker sub and it did help a little bit. But, only so much you can do with a paper sub.

I'm still undecided if I want front or rear fire, can we make a poll or something lol?

Tough call... but here's my opinion. I think the rear facing is the more versatile option because it has plenty of room to breath in the trunk and that is not going to change if you have rear passengers. The front facing is likely going to sound different depending on whether you have the back seats up or down... just my 2 cents.

I was curious about this too. I turned around my JL Audio 12w3 just to test it out front facing and wasn't impressed with the sound output. However it's underpowered right now so that may not help. I run it rear facing in a regular box and plan to probably by the rear facing enclosure because of this. Hopefully others can chime in.

When we say front firing, do we mean the woofer is pushed up against the carpeted back of the seat? Or do we mean that it fires directly into the cabin because it is placed behind a seat that is folded down?

But I think we are asking the wrong question. We should be asking "should I design my trunk subwoofer system for the rear seat always up or always down?"

If both rear seats are up, then there will be so much low-pass filtering going on, that any sound that makes it into the cabin will be so low in frequency that it matters not what direction the woofer faces. If the system is designed for that situation, then it will also not sound right when a seat is folded down.

Plus, it all depends on the SPL response of the panel speakers. If they reach far enough down in frequency, then the subwoofer LPF can also be set low (or possibly skipped if the rear seats are up).

This stuff is much less simple and intuitive than it seems. In my experience it is impossible to achieve a well designed system with high SQ without measurements and knowledge.

Excellent points. A lot of the sound you get out of the subs depends on how you cross them over.

If you cross them over very low, you'll get nice low frequency rumble, but will miss out on some upper bass impact the lots of people seem to be after. In this situation, seats up or seats down will matter less.

If, however, you cross them higher looking for more upper bass impact, it will matter more if the seats are up or down.

I have run a front firing system before with a single Infinity Kappa 12". It did not touch the back seats but was just anbout 2"s back. Two different sounds with the seats up or down. A little more SPL with the seats down but I ran it with the seats up. Between the controls on my entry level Alpine amps I had no problem dialing it in for sound and tactile impact. It was extremly clean and very musical. I would think with a properly designed and built enclosure and dialing in the crossover and bass boost(or lack of), that design should/could satisfy all but the biggest of bass heads.

From the looks of my zenclosure it appears I could simply flip the box around and make mine front firing if I chose to. I haven't gotten to that point as I'm still making the hole for the bigger
-_-

--side note if you know what sub you're installing make sure to tell them so they get the diameter for the hole correct. My older Rockford p3 I guess needs a bigger diameter hole then the standard 10inch subs.

Got the hole big enough to fit the sub. Got the sub mounted to the box, I need to mess with mounting the amp and getting that squared away.

Looks very nice!

Question: It appears to be off center as far as top to bottom. Is that due to the actual enclosure size in relationship to the baffle?

Lol that is because my floor is rasied about 1.5 inches due to my air ride. I braced my floor board up to keep everything hidden underneath without it sitting ontop of it. The hole is actually centered top to bottom
