I have exchanged some emails with zenclosures and they told me the rear firing single sounds better than the front from that one guy's experience. They just made the front firing available cause people asked for it.

If it were me... and I'm not a bass-head, I'd pick up a second sub, the dual rear-facing enclosure and run your Thor in two channel mode, so 125w per sub. I just think you'll be happier with the output, and if it's too much bass, dial it back a bit. Better to have too much than not enough!

Interesting on Zen's comments on rear versus front firing. It is a divided camp on that one. I do feel that rear is more popular and is certainly capable of louder SPLs. But then so is a ported enclosure vs. a sealed. The down side that I see is that so many times the trunk rattles like crazy and outside the car it is so annoying. Sound rather cheap to me. Of course I would expect most of the rattles can be chased down and cured. Also you music preference and listening habits also play a part in your decision. I still subscribe the rear facing and/or ported for SPL and front/sealed for SQ. It is great that what ever your style is there are options.

Rear facing in any car is typically going to sound better than forward firing.. to get the best sound from any sub that fires directly into the cab you would need to make the cabin air tight.. and it really isn't possible.. if you have a forward firing sub.. open the trunk and notice how much louder the sub gets..

Rattles you pretty much summed it up..

Ported versus sealed is something people debate a lot.. me personally always love ported because IF.. a big IF.. the ported enclosure is tuned properly to the sub you will get all the characteristics of a sealed enclosure plus the better low response a ported box gives. Ports are impacted greatly by several factors.. Box volume.. port size.. so if you have a single 10 you could typically get away with a 3 inch round port or a 9 sqin square port.. as you go larger or more subs port surface area needs to increase or you will have port noise and it can cause issues as well.. from basically causing a restriction.. I guess like a cars exhaust.. ported boxes are great its just they get a bad rap because people buy prefab ported boxes .. and there is no such thing.. every sub has different requirements.. most manufacturers have recommended specs.. but they typically have the tuning frequency of the box too high.. the thing is about a ported box also is.. below the tuning frequency the sub has no ability to control itself any longer.. so it is nice to have an amp with a subsonic filter.. but that is why I use computer software to design an appropriate box based off the thiele small parameters of the sub. I can get the tuned frequency down and the box more usable.. There is a lot to box design.. so.. unless the ported enclosure is designed to the sub.. it is always best to go sealed.. its just safer and more forgiving..

SPL is dependent of where the measurement is taken.. there are so many different ways to measure that.. and depending on the type of vehicle .. rear or forwards.. or down firing.. can all be different in different cars.. like a truck.. almost always fires forward.. SUVs can go just about anyway.. a lot of variables..

Good suggestions here. Budget and space in the car are major concerns. It's just going to cost too much to make it sound like my Acura. Looking at processors and all to use my Thor but heck for $300 you can get a 5 channel Fosgate amp with sline level converters, crossovers, front level controller, everything!!!! ONE COMPONENT! So easy! What to do. I want to use the Thor, remember I had it in both my sports cars when I was a kid! But I can always get $200 at least for it. No point hanging on to it for nothing. It's a beast! And a single 10 will be plenty for me, I need the other half for the amps, and need to have room in the trunk for stuff.

OEMradio, sounds like you are well versed! I certainly have experienced the sub getting louder with the trunk open. But when the trunk is closed I still feel the bass is tighter and punchier vs. louder with some boom. I know that I am in the minority here though. Over the years my tastes have changed. I have a home sub(HSU) that allows multiple ported and sealed configurations with EQ, you guessed it, sealed again. And yes, a lower SPL but will lower extension.

Fully agree on the ported being more efficient, especially at the freq. of the port tuning. With the extra efficiency something has to give and it is the depth the sub will reach. Very tough to get the best of both worlds.

I have heard a lot of rear facing and some ported that excel on certain types of music as the systems have been tuned that way. I pop in a disc that I like and the system will seem unbalanced, maybe bass heavy. I have not heard many systems that seem to do everything well. Even at the very high-end home hi-fi shows that I have gone to some $100k systems just can't do everything. Crazy!

Happy there is variety and discussion for all of us to learn from.

Thanks .. I have always had good luck getting a great balance.. I just have most of my experience with JL Audio.. And they are great in ported enclosures.. I can get everything I want.. I can really get a good response prediction using the software I use.. I have great luck with tuning the boxes around 32hz some below.. The typical prefab ported enclosure is at 40 he and I've seen some higher.. And that's ridiculous.. That's why they are what I call one note wonders.. I have built so many enclosures in my life .. Ridiculous.. Coming home in Mdf dust every day.. Glad I'm not with that anymore..

But enclosures are all opinion.. Subjective.. I can build a car and 9/10 will say it's the best they have heard.. But there is always one person that just thinks it is missing something..

But as long as the end user is happy.. That's all that matters ..

Just ordered my zenclosures box tonight. single 10" rear facing driver's side. I like the Rockford Fosgate amp cause all adjustments can be made from the top panel. adjustments on the side will be very hard to do. I think I'm going to abandon the use of my old amp. Will cost $300 just for a DSP that suits me, well Kicker has a simpler one for $200. I think one 5 channel amp will make it easy. What scares me how to get the wires from the front doors to the amp in the back and there again. Has to be a spot under the dash on each side for the passive crossovers for the front separates, ahh heck I should just pay someone to do it. I just don't have any experience with shops here.

I'd stop by a couple of shops and tell them what you are interested in and ask some questions... then decide which shop you feel best about.

It's very easy to pull panels on our cars. There's room in both quarter panels for the crossovers. Running the wires will probably be the easy part

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think I can do it myself. I did this once before on my 91 Dodge Stealth. Had the whole interior apart, just afraid to do it on this car for some reason. But if I do it I'm going to do it once and do it right.

There's something intimidating about tearing into a brand new car! :eyebulge:
