Would you use this?

Hey guys, lately I've been trying to think of something interior wise I could do to add some flair to the cabin. What do yall think about a custom usb drive? Before I get all the hate I know I'll get, I understand usb drives for music in cars is the way of the past. I would be making this, and possibly more, simply for the interior look. It would also still function as a working usb drive to store info, say for work or school.

As far as designs, I was thinking possibly a mustang(car) or maybe even a stallion type design. Maybe even a ford logo?

Not sure what you mean by custom USB drive, though. You thinking of making a case for a thumbdrive or something like that? Seems interesting.

Me too, I guess we're the record buyers of the next generation. Something about having just the songs in digital form seems almost valueless. An album is a thought-out collection created by the artists of specific songs in a specific order with art (graphic) and other things (words maybe) with it.

I can see how USB for music could be considered "the old way" as a Bluetooth connection to your phone is going to soon be the norm. I still haven't had a car with a working (factory) CD player...

I agree... Usb/sd is the best way to get good quality music without taking up the space of cd's.

Discrete CDs are easier to deal with as far as selecting what you want to play is concerned. Menus are for home computers, laptops, and cell phones.

Don't even think of suggesting selection by voice command, ain't no way I'm going to talk to my car unless I'm swearing at it.


But a flash drive with a Mustang motif for use with my laptop, sure.

I personally use the usb for music as it provides many perks.

1. very discrete (hide mine away in the center console)
2. no hassle (just leave it in the car 24/7)
3. not worried about theft
4. sound quality is fabulous
5. thousands upon thousands of songs at your fingertips
6. no loss/usage of phone battery

Perhaps you could design something and print it on a 3D printer. They have a ton of usb designs for sale, but most are kind of childish looking.

I have a phone with saved music on it, and while that's what I use I'd gladly use a USB over it. I like having my phone notify me when I get emails, or a text. But when I'm listening to music in my car its annoying for the music to temporarily stop and to hear a notification. Also having that 3 foot cord to connect my phone is annoying to get tangled up in random stuff in my center console.

I think its a good idea. USB's can hold a lot of info, I'd be surprised if you could max one of the larger one's out with just music.

I use an iPod Classic for music in my car, and I definitely need to pick and choose what goes on it to fit. I have about two terrabytes of music in my collection, although a lot of I never listen to, just sort of music hoarding -- why do I need every single concert Pearl Jam has ever done?

That's why I proposed a stallion, not the typical running "pony." Technicalities my friend haha.

And thanks everyone for the positive feedback. I'm still in the idea stage on this, but seeing how many of you still use usb's, I plan on continuing with this idea. Maybe I'll come up with something? Not sure which route to head as of right now though

Uh, I have my USB stick of 32 GB in the USB port in the console now. It works great and all the music is cataloged in the Sync system. All I need to do is hit the button and ask for an artist, genera, album, or song and it plays. No CD changing, it isn't exposed, and it is always available. I even set up my own collection using the genera option...road songs, favorites, Christmas, etc. Works great.

My opinion on this idea is contrary to OP's (Sorry!). I like my gadgets to look as simple and functional as possible so a USB stick should be as small and simple as possible and not try to look like something else.

From this idea I get images of applying the same sort of idea to everything and having a cobra for a shifter, foot-prints for pedals, a pirate ship wheel for the steering wheel, etc. That's a drastic example but that's the sort of feel I get from things that look like other things.

It's cool that you're thinking though and I'm sure there's a market for your idea, it's just not for me.

Thank you,Brad, for the sharing of your honest opinion. I understand where your coming from. I agree with you also, that too much "flair" can definitely have a negative effect, and like you, I always refrain from the overkill of tacky items such as the ones you mentioned. The usb idea though, I believe, is just enough to be noticed, without being noticed, if you get the point I'm trying to convey. If it becomes too much for ones liking, it could simply be stashed in the center console, rather than beneath the radio. Just my 2 cents. Again though, thank you for your feedback! First person to NOT agree with me.
