COVID hit, the effect was interesting. Plethora of new (used) mainly and a lot of new cars flooded the streets. All temp tags, 6 months later. All the cars now was dubbed out. Giant rims, blacked out tint, neon lights under glow etc. 15 inch woofers I swear.
Sadly, that phenomenon exists to lesser degrees everywhere. Texas has a huge problem of fake paper plates. I cannot even count the number of fake paper plate cars I see every single day on the road. But certainly going into some areas, you then start seeing the fake paper plates on cheap ex-rental Chevy Malibus with 26" rims on them, annoying stereos, etc. I mean, dude, there's a place called Rent-a-Tire. https://www.rentawheel.com/ ......... Srsly. You're gonna Aaron's rent-to-own a set of wheels and tires? That's supreme mismanagement of money. Probably welfare/unemployment checks going to make the payments.

Last go around people dumped big SUVs. I expect cars who are daily drivers and more value driven to be the most highly impacted. So mainstream brands and cars that generally suck on fuelSports car owners are probably a bit less price sensitive on fuel. Nobody buys a GT because it is cheap to operate.

Some factors that might suggest a lower price as gas rises
  1. Used for daily driving
  2. Poor mileage relative to similar body styles (larger suvs, bigger engines on non performance cars)
  3. Purchased less affluent customers
  4. Run on premium
  5. Doesn’t have a specific utility (ie people who need a work truck)

The plates thing. The paper plates went away and most cars don’t even have plates. They run red lights. Stop signs, don’t stop for cops, cops was no longer pursuing unless it was a shooting or assault.

It was free wild Wild West here for a good while.

They are NOW starting to enforce laws again. But not in trotwood, that area is lawless unless shootings. That’s the only time they go there

Edit

Above post, here’s the thing. Most gt and ecoboost can run 87 Oct. it’s just those enthusiast who modded them out to where they can’t. The gt still gets decent mpg really. Assuming stock confit and not floored, ecoboost is actually a regular car with sporty look as long as feet stay off it

I got 35-36mpg w my ecoboost. Non pp has 3.31 gearing, which I very much appreciated as I did mostly highway. But then I tuned it, I would of def gone stock tune if I had the car still.

I can guarantee there will be a gasoline hybrid-electric version of the S650 Mustang. Possibly two versions, a performance level version and an "Eco" version. People will want to enjoy a sporty car without the fuel economy penalty.

Almost went for the Ecoboost HP for MPG but couldn't stand the sound. The sound and power of the Coyote made my mind up. Awesome engine. Plus 10 speed auto at cruise gets great MPG from what I checked. Still waiting for it. Most of all don't get something you really don't want, too much money involved. Even if it sits in the driveway more I don't care. I can stick my head in the exhaust and listen to that V8. Good luck. There is a lot of great help here to get to where you want to be.

Old Fart here , assessment based on the gas shortage of the 80s, various recessions ( including the last recorded one in 2008 ), there will likely be some change in purchases for big honking vehicles, the EVs will gain more favor, as will hybrids, but unlike the past I can't imagine it will affect the Mustang much as so few are being made now and many Gearheads, Petrolhead, Machineheads, and Motörhead's around the World are seriously getting one fearing the death of the rumbling V8 is nigh. Pretty cool though, the post about the guy getting 35-36 with his Ecoboost, that might convince some Stang buyers to go a more fuel efficient route.

As others have alluded, doubtful. Nobody in their right minds ever decided to buy a Mustang because of its fuel efficiency.

Well with the price of fuel I guess the Gen 3 knock sensors will be getting a workout as I pull high RPM pulls on 87.......... Or maybe I will become a part throttle racer like a few on here :)J/K

I don't give a $hit my car is just something to enjoy and I intend to keep doing it! Also I think this will end the V8 availability for cars like these sooner making us that held on to them actually get more for them in say 3-5 years but time will tell on that one.

Values of Electric vehicles have risen lately due to the higher demand in my area.

However in the case of buying a s550 I might suggest waiting a little bit until more info on the s650 comes out then make your decision. In the meantime I would research what you want as much as possible and evaluate what your market is doing in terms of value & option availability.

Good luck OP!:like: 🍻

The issue with that is if you aren’t already on a list you might not get a car. Especially if you want something special.

I wonder how the domestic manufacturers are feeling right now about abandoning the car market to focus on SUVs....

Disagree. The entire basis of the Mustang II (74-78) and the foxbody Mustang (1979-1993) was for a sporty, fuel-efficient Mustang. The Foxbody had the naturally aspirated 2.3L engine all the way until the very last day of production. In fact, most '93 models you'll come across are 4cyl cars (many have been engine swapped). These cars got great mileage and are still used by enthusiasts as economical commuter cars.

My sister in law has a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SUV that gets 40mpg on a typical drive. Not sure if Ford has managed the same in the Escape, but probably.
