When I start the engine of my Mustang, the meter displays "To START Press Brake."
It is possible to start the engine without any problems.
I'm pretty sure I'm on the brakes, and the brake lights are on.
However, the engine start button does not flash when you step on the brake.
Has anyone encountered this problem before?
I want to cure this.

I'd check the Neutral Safety switch.

Ah....it sounds like your "Press Brake" message is directly related to the chime issue you are having as well.

If the spacer idea I shared with you works for both issues, the problem was integral to wear of the shifter lockout rod assembly. But if the spacer idea I shared does not resolve your issues, the microswitch at the front of the gear selector assembly is at fault for BOTH issues.

The parking micro switch was activated to turn off the engine. (The chime was not activated.)
After that, when I started the engine again, the "Press brake" message did not appear.

If the switch breaks, can I start the engine in neutral?

I'm not sure what conditions were present for Google to state "No". I guess we'd have to know more of Google's context. (BTW...I've had numerous times Google's AI has failed me.)

Anyway....When I was having the same issue as the OP is having, I was able to start my car in Park...but I don't recall attempting a start in neutral. Considering that the shifter lock-out (neutral safety switch) is a fail-safe feature, it is interesting that I was still able to start it in the Park position even though that neutral safety switch interaction failed to engage.

Based on that, it appears that when the electro-mechanical fail safe fails, the dash message the OP is experiencing and the door chimes he's experiencing are Ford's "fail-safe #2" procedures. 🙂 . Those 2 features definitely got my attention, as they also are getting the OP's attention.

I replaced the shifter microswitch but that did not fix the issue.
The brake lights turn on and off normally and the engine can be started by pressing and holding the start button.
Does anyone know why this message appears?
