don't ascribe to 'technical superiority' what can be adequately explained by "nameplate dropping". If Ford really wanted stronger I expect they would have grabbed the TR6060 and asked for some ratio changes.
Ford used the lighter Tremec 3160 transmission specifically in order to get about 30 lbs off the nose of the car and improve handling compared to a 6060. They upgraded the components inside the 3160 to handle the Voodoo's power and torque. The 3160 will definitely handle the Mach 1 engine that makes less power and torque. And it's lighter than the MT-82 as well.

Yes the 6060 is the easy answer that other brands have used and still use. But Ford was trying to give the Mustang a better solution.

and koodos. Question is how did it affect price and manufacturing capacity? Perfect is the enemy of Good.

I don't know if I would call the 3160 perfect, but it does work great in the GT350. Shifting at the 8,250 redline is no problem whatsoever. And the 3160 just keeps working better and better on track.

I have no idea about price or cost, but having spent years dailying a GT350 - the 3160 is a great transmission in that application.

so he may say it's stronger just so he has business driven to him
Obviously you don't know Ben. Anyways, with GT350 owners, the generally know how to drive there cars, know how to shift, etc., etc. The majority of MT82 owners are those that never driven a manual before.. and frankly I'm shocked more haven't been destroyed.

It comes complete with an attractive front end, unlike the hideous catfish face of the 2018-current regular mustangs.

I don't believe that for a cotton-picking minute. Care to cite some actual stats? The number of people who buy a manual who have no previous experience is vanishingly small. People with 30 years of manual experience don't even buy stick.

I drive manual since I start driving 10 or so years ago yet in only 2 years that thing is leaking, rebuild and now is locking 2nd to 3rd ... To be fair if local dealer sell TR3160 over the counter this is the easiest path of upgrade for an Europe car as sourcing Magnum XL will be a nightmare here.

Here in Canada, the Mach 1 list price is 20K higher than a fully loaded GT Premium PP1 with all the options (401A, Active Exhaust, Enhanced Security and B&O stereo). No thanks.
Where are you getting these numbers? The Ford.ca website says otherwise:

$48,710 2021 GT Premium
$2200 401A
$700 Enhanced Security
$4500 PP1
$2500 Magneride
$1000 Active Exhaust
$1000 B&O
$1900 Freight & A/C Tax
$62,510 total CAD MSRP

$67,500 2021 Mach 1 Premium
included 700A
$1650 Mach 1 Elite (bundles B&O and Security)
included Enhanced Security
included PP1
included Magneride
included Active Exhaust
included B&O
$1900 Freight & A/C Tax
$71,050 total CAD MSRP

When comparably equipped, the actual difference in list price between a GT and a Mach 1 is $8540. That is still a very large price premium but it's not $20K.

And it's lighter than the MT-82 as well.
By a whopping 2 lbs, reportedly :). Having said that, it's hard for a lighter manual tranny to be beefier than a heavier one, so it's good that the TR3160 is almost as heavy as a MT82. The MT82 is reportedly quite robust, but its 'weak link' is the shift forks... but they were reinforced in late 2018, so all 2019+ cars have it. The difference is mostly on the shifter, I think. I've owned several Tremecs over the years, and I personally prefer the MT82 on my Bullitt; go figure :).

People with 30 years of manual experience don't even buy stick.
Who told you that? Certainly not the case with me (59), nor anybody else I know :). I have 40+ years of driving manuals myself. Didn't have a manual car in some of those years, but did have manual motorcycles :).

I looked it up before I wrote that and I thought it was 10 lbs lighter. When you look at the weight of the 3160, remember that the one in the GT350 is actually lighter than the standard 3160 as well.

... which all goes back to my original point of, what are people willing to pay for badges and emblems. Not saying its right or wrong. Just saying that if people couldn’t tell visually what it was, would the cost be worth the performance gains to them. That’s why I’m so interested in test data.
Well I didn’t wait for test data. After test driving a base Mach, today I ordered a Premium with the Handling Package. Guess I paid for badges.
