Why do my rear studs keep breaking off?? They’re torqued to spec!

Thank you!

Oh well, another reason to avoid velgen wheels, thanks for reminding yet again to never buy your products.
Velgen wheels can be torque to 150 pounds without any issues. I wasn’t able to find one for the mustang but here you can see they can be torque to.

Not my ox. As I'm sure you've heard many a time in school, that is left as an exercise for the reader. Aka you.
Well he said the lug nuts /rim /size is all different. That’s what he told me. I won’t have a rebuttal for him because I don’t know nothing about this stuff. It was the owner of need for speed Motorsports that told me this. I believe you guys here vs him anyways. There was this one scientist that commented on one of my posts. He was very knowledgeable maybe I’ll tag him for his input. Thank you for all your help tho I appreciate it !

Correct. Lubricity changes the effective torque. If you were applying the fastener dry, then the torque value would remain at 150 ft/lbs.
It changes the clamp (or fastener displacement/"stretch") you achieve using the torque you're applying.

That's not what Velgen rep was saying few pages ago 🤷‍♂️

they might be new and don’t know the specs. Back in 2020 when I had my other mustang. I called Velgen to ask them about the torque spec for the Mustang as I myself thought it was to high. They told me that I must follow the car manufacture’s torque specs. He also said that I should invest in a good set of lug nuts which I did. Between my old 2020 mustang and my 2021 mustang I have put over 20,000 miles on them and I don’t see any issues with the bolt seats or anything. My project 6gr’s have been on my 2021 mustang since 10 or 11 thousand miles and I have also torque those to 150 pounds with no issues And that car is currently at 40,000 miles.

@Soulja4187 , I'm not arguing that you can actually do it, but if they give keys and passwords to somebody who is "new and don’t know the specs", that is another reason for me to shop elsewhere. It's either the person doesn't know what he is talking about, or their products are not built well.

I'm sure your wheels are fine after 20k miles, I would be more interested how they hold up after 200k miles or extended track driving loads.

Again I am absolutely baffled at the amount of people that don't torque their wheels to 150 ft/lbs. I have never seen anyone snap a stud or breaking a wheel by taking a factory style bulge nut and no anti seize by torquing to 150. If the wheel breaks at 150 then it shouldn't be on the car in the first place. I'm going to be honest I'd much rather trust a certified practicing engineer than a sales rep from any company.

I've had rear wheel studs break off on my '72, and the cause was from the lug nuts had loosened. (I suspected someone played a nasty prank.) Anyway, 150 foot pounds seems too much. I usually torque mine to around 120. I checked a few sites online and came across this site. See what you think. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/the-toolbox/wheel-lug-nut-size-guide-torque-spec-chart/28890
I'm sorry but I would not trust this. Torque to the factory recommended and engineered 150 ft/lbs.
