I"ve never understood why in today's digital age police ask you for the registration paperwork. Once they run your tag, and if you produce a valid license that matches the info on the tag (name/address/make/model, etc.), why must you also produce a piece of paper that states the same thing?
No kidding. I was a witness to an accident a few months ago. I started to hand the responding officer my business card in case the PD needed my information later and he just asked "Is the truck registered in your name?" When i said it was, he told me he'd just put the plate number in his report and anyone who wanted it could just look it up. Same thing here.

I did eventually find the registration. It was in the envelope I thought it would be in, but it was the only piece of paper that stayed in the envelope when I pulled everything else out.

Perhaps the reason was just a pretense, because the vehicle fits for a typical clientele.
That's something we have quite often over here.
The sheriff may ask than for a warning triangle and first-aid kit (is mandatory over here), to take a look in the trunk, and that's it.
Kind of fishing in muddy waters.
Bully tactics. Disgusting.

I doubt he would have really given you a ticket, but that's kind of hilarious his cruiser got smacked while messing with you. Clearly just a false pretense to check you out. I hate when cops do this type of stuff, but there's really nothing to do about it or any reason to get upset. Had he actually ticketed you, this would have been super trivial to fight with this footage. Just send it to a traffic lawyer and never think about it again.
I think if a person is pulled over for no reason the cop should be billed for wasting the person's time. The cop should have to pay from their own pocket.

I guess there are pluses and minuses to living in an area where the police force is understaffed. Well, and I rarely drive outside of rush hour commute. I'm sure that helps a lot. It's extremely rare for me to see anyone pulled over.

While at my local police department to renew a permit, I saw the bank of hi def wide screen monitors all of which had eight different intersections on screen. They would change every fifteen seconds or so. I would guess the op was on a screen already. You could read the month the plate expired on the little stickers.
Amazing as it seems for Massachusetts, if they're going to ticket you for a surchargable offense, they need to see you do it in person or do an in-person investigation (i.e. ticketing the determined at-fault driver in an accident).

Here it's all a bit more relaxed, the police are nice, as long as you don't get stupid with them.
And you always have the option to take the fine for missing warning triangle and first aid kit.
That's not a big deal in this country, nobody sees their freedom or civil rights threatened.
What's the point, it's just a trunk. For example in the parking lot of the supermarket anyone who walks by can look inside while you're loading the groceries.
Whoever keeps his family secrets in there can't be saved.
But that's how perceptions differ.
There are certainly things about your country that the average German would wonder why you accept.

Like others have said, it did turn red just as you were turning on the other street. It would have been a justified ticket for sure and the dashcam would have just secured the evidence. However, you handled the cop brilliantly and didn't have any issues. I live near a pretty busy intersection that if it's yellow before you're past the line, you had better stop. Traffic can back up and you'll get nailed with a "blocking the box" ticket.

I mean with as much sh*t as we are responsible for these days, why not eliminate the little piece of paper?!?! Not to mention how many people misplace their registration and/or don't remember to put the most current registration in the glvoe box?
Yep. I don't carry registration anymore, don't have a window sticker as required, or a front plate, and tint is too dark. I've been pulled over several times, and none of these things has been ticketed (knock on wood). It's a joke any of this is required anymore.

My experience is, shut off truck, roll down window immediately, both hands at 12 o'clock and do not move them, yes sir, no sir, I have a CHL and the pistol is behind my seat, sorry sir there was no excuse for what I did, generally gets me out of a lot of tickets.

Same. I've gotten out of 3 tickets in the last few years by just being polite and courteous, and of course promptly providing all of the requested documentation.

If I was on a jury, after watching the video, I would vote not guilty. You were at a point in the intersection when it turned red that I could not say you were guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I can see arguments both ways which creates doubt.
