A yellow light doesn't mean to keep going and barely make it through the light, it means to come to a stop and wait for the next one.
That may be the case in VA, but not here.

Here, a yellow means stop if it safe to do so, otherwise proceed through the intersection. That's why the cop made a point (twice) about it being solid red when I entered the intersection, even though it clearly wasn't.

If we assume my reaction time is about a second, I wouldn't have reacted to the light until I was within 50 feet of the intersection (based upon the indicated speed and the time it took me to get to the stop line). 32 to zero in 50' would be considered a panic stop, not a "safe" one, especially if there were any cars behind me.

See post #9 for the math.

Hey, let me commend you on the way you handled yourself and spoke to the officer. That will get you a long way in life and hopefully he would have let you go with no ticket either way.
Was he right or wrong, did he have other motives for the stop, who knows.
You did what you had to, nice !

Gotcha'......it's odd it's different in different states.
Yeah.

If you want to have some fun, think about the "left on red at the intersection of 2 one-way streets" game. Legal in some states and not in others.

I"ve never understood why in today's digital age police ask you for the registration paperwork. Once they run your tag, and if you produce a valid license that matches the info on the tag (name/address/make/model, etc.), why must you also produce a piece of paper that states the same thing? I mean with as much sh*t as we are responsible for these days, why not eliminate the little piece of paper?!?! Not to mention how many people misplace their registration and/or don't remember to put the most current registration in the glvoe box?

It is illegal in some states without consent I believe. I always inform passengers that everything is being recorded.
You can (and should) record all interactions with law enforcement.

There is no law which states (or can even be considered constitutional) you cannot film in public. You cannot trespass the eyes and you can film anything visible in public including license plates, parking lots, inside cars (in plain sight doctrine), and police interactions.

Be thankful. Your dash camera didn't help you, it only would have proved your guilt in running the light.
Maybe in Va but not in Ky.

I thought it has been ruled on by SCOTUS. It is not illegal to record someone without their consent in a public place if they are visible and audible, especially if they don’t have reasonable expectations of privacy.
Y'all be careful with your interpretations of things. Remember that your vehicle is NOT public. Your vehicle is private. Thus the plain view doctrine CrackedHorn talks about below.

To clarify, inside cars is not public. What you are talking about is being able to see and record inside private property from a location of public property.

Somebody previously mentioned stores and recording systems. Stores are also not public property. They are private property. The owners or management team can revoke your access to their location anytime. The fact that you can enter somewhere does not make it public. Case in point, if you leave the front door of your house unlocked, and I can walk right in, that does not make your house public property.

As far as giving notice... I live in a one-party state. Only one party needs to know that anything is being recorded (and I believe in my state, this only applies to audio recordings, there is nothing about video only) and that one party can be the one doing the recording.

Difference between recording in a store and recording theough a car window is that the store property is private.

If you record items through a car window while standing on a sidewalk, for instance, it is perfectly legal. This is a constitutionally protected activity. I never said you could enter someone's private property.

You can record anything in public and in plain sight as I stated earlier. This is the exact reason LEO can use evidence against you that they see in plain sight, like an open alcohol container or drugs that they can see through the window without any warrant.

I didn't see anyone mentioning entering private property in this thread or confusing public access with public property.

Inside of cars is definitely not considered private property as police can use anything illegal or questionable they plainly see inside from outside the car as probable cause for search or arrest.
It is private property. However, anything "in plain sight " isn't subject to any warrant, search,, or permission and can be considered evidence.

Being inside the car is private property, seeing inside of the car is not a violation or privacy. That was the point you missed.

All of that agrees with what I said. My point in posting it was clarifying for those who may misunderstand what you and the other posted. As far as confusing public access with public property, yes. Someone at the beginning of the thread said something to the effect of, "how do you think they can record in a store," in reference to people in the store being on public property.

In any case, this is very much digressing from the OP's original post intent.

While at my local police department to renew a permit, I saw the bank of hi def wide screen monitors all of which had eight different intersections on screen. They would change every fifteen seconds or so. I would guess the op was on a screen already. You could read the month the plate expired on the little stickers.
Moral of the story is get a camera and make sure you get the recommended memory card.
I have this one permanently mounted in my truck and am ordering one for my gt soon.
