When will 2019s arrive?

I finally have the opportunity to order a GT350R at MSRP. The ordering guide says late availability. My dealer told me now if I order it now, I can expect it in May. Does that sound about right?

That’s a tricky question. I believe it depends on the rank/volume of mustang sales that dealer has to determine where in the Order que your car will be built. Larger high volume dealers get their cars before lower volume dealers. This is what I was told by the dealership. I ordered my 2016 Gt350 in June 2015 and I got it in May 2016.

I think they are wanting to make sure the 2019 engine does not have oil consumption issues before they get released. I don’t say that as a wise ass either.

The build numbers for the 2019's are being assigned and there are already at least 250 cars with vin's and on the schedule for production in February for April delivery. We will see how it plays out.

I was told my new engine was probably taken away from a 2019 build. So if I got somebody in delayed a bit, I’m sorry.....well not really.

I hope we will be getting the latest motors. My car gets dropped off tonight for tear down and eventual motor replacement.

I dropped mine off yesterday. New engine arrived on Friday. I hope to get it back next week.

Congratulations on getting an opportunity to order a 2019 R model at MSRP and suggest that you should pull the trigger based on a very short run of R models based on my understanding for 2019!

I would suggest that MSRP would be a great deal based on a short production year and a possibly a small number of R's built for the 2019 MY.

You can bet that based on the Cup 2 tires being standard on an R model that FR will not start production until sometime until late March or early April subject to the local cold weather and that the cold weather issues that plague these Michelin tires will be an issue.

I would also suggest that your dealership is pretty much spot on from a timing standpoint and to expect an R model as early as April would be very optimistic.

If you get a late allocation based on your "Vehicle Confirmation Order" and your "Priority Code" with 10 being the best priority code and then higher that June or July would be more in line for receiving your car.

All of the 2019 GT350's have Cup 2's, so the whole run is starting late.

Fully aware that the 2019 GT350's come with the Michelin Cup 2 tires but must point out that these are custom Cup 2's that were developed between Ford and Michelin specifically for the GT350.

The tread mold and compound is unique to the GT350 therefore would suggest that the these custom Cup 2's for the GT350 will come with a harder compound and certainly more tread depth than the Cup 2's that come standard on the R models.

It will be interesting to compare each of these Cup 2 tires once side by side and suggest that not only will the tread depth on the GT350's will be greater than the R model but so will the treadwear rating.

Will these custom Cup 2 tires that were developed just for the GT350 be subject to cracking in sub-freezing temperatures as is the case with the R model remains to be seen but you can count on two different Cup 2 tires for each of these models.

Good question! I had some experience with this when I took delivery of a 2008 BMW V8 M3 in March of 2008. The early cars were offloaded in Montreal and shipped across Canada by rail in February, and many arrived in Vancouver with their PS2's cracked. BMW realized they had a problem when new owners started having flat tires, so they issued a "STOP ALL DELIVERIES" message. My dealer got the phone call as I drove mine off the dealer's lot and my tires were fine, so I wasn't caught up in the hold, but it was close. And those were PS2's which are better in the cold than PSC2's.

Ford could take a cue from the BMW solution to this - nowadays they ship the cars that come with performance tires (like M cars) from the factory with snow tires on them. They then ship the actual tires by air to the dealer. When the car arrives, they swap tires to the proper rubber and put the snowies up for sale. My wife's 428i is running around on a set of snow tires that were installed for transit on an M4.

Not to sound like a negative Nancy, but I wouldn't trust any of my local (Ford) dealers to change the oil in my car, much less swap tires without borking the rims and/or lugnuts. The less they touch the better.

Well the car is done with new engine transplanted in, but its going to snow by the time I can get over to the dealer. So I'll get it back Wednesday or Thursday. They started on Saturday and finished it yesterday evening.
