Wheel bearing?

Ok my cars at Ford today as when I hit certain potholes/man hole covers I get a louder noise from nearside rear. I thought it could be arm/link/bush had failed.

They just phoned and said it's the nearside rear wheel bearing. £389 inc VAT and NOT covered as I have Eibachs and BMR lock out kit.

Their words went something like this, "wheel bearing failed, cost of replacement is blah blah not covered under warranty, because is something you have done."

I'm taking it somewhere else tomorrow for a second opinion. Will let you know but I thought a wheel bearing will not be a bang/thud but a grinding noise etc.

Anyone else come across this please?

ps car 13months old, 11,000 miles.

I don't get why they won't do this sort of stuff under warranty. They make a fortune out of it!

All the failing wheel bearings I've had have been a drone noise that increases in volume as the wear increases. Never a thud or bang. If there is sufficient slop to cause a bang then you should be able to grab the tyre and wobble it hearing the play!

I can't see how a lockout kit has anything to do with a wheel bearing:shrug:

And Ford themselves sell Eibach springs:headbonk:addle:

I could see them maybe making a case that the change in ride height contributed to a wheel bearing failure. But it would have to be drastically out of camber to knock out a wheel bearing so quickly.

Just remembered there was a BMR thread recently about loose rear hubnuts causing similar symptoms. Could be as simple as that and easy for a bad mechanic to blame on a wheel bearing and charge £300 to tighten to the correct torque.

As above, wheel bearings don't bang.

Noise would be a low hum/whirring/droning.

They could try and argue your suspension mods are putting more strain through the bearings but they're talking bollocks.

UK is a pretty persnickety in general. Probably why you guys invented that word.

However, I've got Eibach lowering springs, spacers and also had mis-torqued wheel lugs and they still covered the wheel bearing under warranty. Didn't even question me about it just replaced them and sent me on my way.

I've never known a wheel bearing to bang, no idea what happens when they totally fail, wheel falls off but as others commented they generally hum/drone which gets louder with speed, easy to identify by just going into neutral and coasting.

Also the only items that adds stress to wheel bearing is wheel spacers, this is why its generally not recommended to go beyond 10-15mm as it can cause excess bearing wear.

But springs, lockout kit will have no negative impact on a wheel bearing.

Also £389 what are they smoking, check pricing on euro car parts and other sites, also ask on the American sections how much they cost and if any experienced similar low life.

Wheel bearings generally last for at least 50k+ so unless Ford are using chocolate bearings that should not be the issue.

You sure the banging is just not a bolt torqued up adequately from your modifications, as things do come loose over time.

I found a loose nearside rear wheel bearing when fitting my 25mm spacers. Originally Ford told me that they wouldn't re-torque it under warranty because I'd fitted wheel spacers. A short heated conversation followed..
Prior to lifting the wheel there had been no symptoms or noises but there was a fair bit of play.

Wheel bearings have been failing from what I've read, it could be simply down to a loose nut from the factory.I think ford supply these already fitted in its housing and not expensive.
As others have said you would get a noise that would get progressively worse other time, nothing to do with lockout kit or lowering.Spacers would put extra load on them but i would guess the nut isn't torqued sufficiently.

If it's knocking it aint the bearing as everyone said.

Your garage is talking bollocks!! Bearings don't bang, they rumble or drone. Another symptom would be disc to pad contact during cornering which may result in a squeaking or rubbing noise.

I should imagine you have a loose shock mount or a worn bush? Has anyone checked the exhaust isn't knocking something?
