Well...there is no accounting for poor, lazy and incompetent or perhaps untruthful, car salesmen. I was quoted a $40K price OUT-THE-DOOR for the car I ordered on Saturday. Today, (the stealership was closed yesterday for Memorial Day...I suppose one of the few dealerships that elected to close for the holiday), the Finance Manager emailed me the build sheet and the final Out-The-Door price was (is) $41,226.17, not including any applicable rebates I qualify for at time of the car's delivery (500 Ford Cash and 750 Military). Needless to say, I was agitated; I called and asked to speak to my salesman...HE WAS GONE FOR THE DAY! So, I spoke with the Finance Manager; he told me the "original agreement" was to sell me the car at invoice, plus all applicable taxes and fees, minus applicable rebates at the time of the car's delivery. When I "pressed" him and asked why the salesman, who drew up the original numbers and sales agreement (which was approved by another finance manager at the dealership on Saturday) quoted me an Out-The-Door price of $40K, he replied, "well, he used the incorrect Georgia Sales tax percentage and he didn't include the advertisement and fuel fees. Now, I was really agitated. So now, I don't know whether to chalk this up to an incompetent and lazy salesman or if the stealership is trying to "pull a fast one" on me. The, as it stands now, Out-The-Door price with all of my rebates (presuming, of course, they are still available at the car's delivery) is: $39,976.17...which, I don't think is too bad of a deal. I informed the finance manager, who sent me the email and whom I subsequently called, I wouldn't pay for the advertisement and fuel fees either...it remains to be seen how this will turn out. Hopefully at worst, maybe I can "split" the $580.00 advertising fee and come out with an OTD price of $39,686.17. I am interested in hearing opinions; should I just walk away and renegotiate with another stealership for the same or better price or should I just chalk this incident up to an incompetent/lazy salesman?
I have some questions.

Where in Georgia are you?
What is the MSRP of the car you ordered?

There are dealerships in the Atlanta Metro are that are advertising as much as 5300 off MSRP.

I'm subbed here. I'll respond ASAP.

GT Pony and 351MachOne,

I ordered the car from a dealership in Augusta (I will be there in 2 months, after I finish school in Florida); the MSRP was $40,695.00. If I could find a dealership in Atlanta to offer me a significant discount off the MSRP ($5300.00 is CRAZY!), I would take it! As it stands now, the final Out-The-Door Price is: $39,888.67. Initially, I asked for an Out-The-Door price of $38,500. I am scouring the net, as I type this, for dealerships in the greater Atlanta area to contact. If I can find one already built and similarly equipped, I will purchase it. If the dealers are indeed discounting this heavily, perhaps a price of $38,000 to $38,500 Out-The-Door isn't impossible. If you know of a dealership in the greater Atlanta area offering significant MSRP discounts, please let me know! As it stands now though, $39,888.67, minus the rebates ($500 Ford Cash and 750 Military rebates {hopefully, both are still available}), isn't a terrible OTD price but knocking another 2K off from the final OTD price would be AMAZING!!

You are being taken for a ride my friend. There is no way you should pay for advertising or a trumped up fuel charge. These are pure profit for the dealership and a way to get you to think you are getting invoice while getting you to pay more. I would go back to the dealership and tell them you are paying the agreed upon 40K out the door and then take the rebates (which are factory to you, not them) off of that amount.

Good luck!

If I could play devils advocate for a minute. Did you get a copy of the DORA with invoice and MSRP? What does it say on your purchase and sale? Invoice price includes the fuel and Ad assessment. I don't understand the out-the-door price with no signed P&S. How much of a deposit did you leave for your ordered car? Did you leave a deposit? No deposit, no contract, no obligation to you, not your car. Because a salesman "quoted" you a price isn't sufficient evidence that both parties signed a contract at an agreed upon price.

Hope it all works out for you but sometimes the buyer has some responsibility to be diligent

Tim,

Thanks for your reply; I appreciate your observations. You make valid points, all of which I will address as well. I did get a copy of the DORA; the invoice price was $38,138.64 and the MSRP was $40,695.00. The advertising and fuel fees are listed on the invoice price column of the DORA but not in the MSRP column. The issue, which you correctly identified was the lack of the "official signed P&S; I am in Florida for training (will be moving to Georgia in late August) and the salesman built the car, ran the price through the finance manager and send me a copy via email. I then called the dealership back and agreed to the terms and asked for an "official copy" of the DORA to be sent, via a PDF (so I could electronically sign it). The salesman didn't send it by close-of-business that day and was off the next day. So, again you make a valid point...the contract wasn't officially or legally valid and there zero sufficient to prove either party signed a a legally binding contract at an OTD price of $40K.

As for my diligence, I don't know what further steps I could have (should have?) taken; my liability was location in another state and relying on a salesman to send me an official contract to sign and email back, which would have made the agreement valid and legal. Had I received the contract on the day it was negotiated, I would have returned it and then called to put down a 1K deposit, to secure the car for order. As it stands now (6:00 CST on Thursday), I am waiting on the dealership's finance manager to decide if they will remove the advertising and fuel fees; if they do, we have a deal, if not, I am not sure. And lastly, yes the responsibility of diligence (CAVEAT EMPTOR) always rests with the buyer in any situation, not just a car. It was, in my own opinion...and certainly not absolving myself of any responsibility, due to the salesman (or finance manager) failing to send me the official P&S to sign on the day the deal was negotiated which prevented me from securing the initial agreed upon deal of 40K OTD.

Base DIB with PP, reverse sensing, and enhanced security -- MSRP $36,310; out-the-door price -- all inclusive (fees, tax, title, rebates, discounts, etc.) -- $34,938.01

I'm totally happy with the car and service, and the price. I've put about 90 miles on it since I picked it up at noon: Fantastic!

My MSRP was 39,950 or so, X-Plan was $36,500 or thereabouts, and I got a $750 rebate knocked off that. Standard CA fees of about $400 plus 8% sales tax in the lowest-tax county in CA. So I was out the door somewhere near MSRP. Reasonable deal, not super low but didn't get hosed.

GT, Premium, 400A, AT, PCAG (Redline), Nav, RSS, Spare, 18" Foundry wheels. Not loaded, just nicely equipped.

Tim,

Long story short...I canceled my order on Saturday. The dealer, in my opinion, was uncooperative and poor in job performance and communication. The dealership personnel (my salesman and two finance managers), despite multiple requests via phone, text and email, didn't send the DORA and an official copy of a P&S to sign, after I clunked down 1K as a deposit to guarantee the order. I have purchased a few cars in my lifetime (early 40's guy here) and I have never experienced a dealership with such an attitude. They behaved as if they were doing me a favor in communicating with me regarding the purchase and as if it were a real imposition to produce a DORA and a P&S. I am not a big fan of the hood mounted blinker's on the 2016 GT'S but I am going to talk with a dealer here in Florida tomorrow (if I order it here, I will take a one way flight to pick it up and drive it to Georgia, when it is ready...about a 500 mile drive) with regards to configuring and ordering a 2016.

That sucks, I figured the dealer would have come around. The fact that you gave them a deposit is the reason why I'm in a '15 and not a '14. I had 2K on a '14 in NJ and two weeks before I was to pick it up "they couldn't finance me" (They sold it to someone else for more) So I lost a Summer and ended up in a much better car for almost the same money and 1.49%. Things happen for a reason.
