Got 2,500 miles on the clock now (been having fun with the car :D ). Still on the factory oil fill...

Seems like there's some mild valve ticking going on when the car is partially warm (like about 1 mile after leaving my driveway, cold start, but the weather is still pretty mild around here). Should I be concerned, or is this just the Japanese heritage of the engine showing through? Driving it pretty gently while it warms up...and I confirmed that it's not transmission noise (makes the same sound if you rev the engine up to the same RPM's with the car stopped and the clutch in).

I cannot count how many old Datsuns, Nissans, and Hondas that me and my family have owned that have spates of valve ticking under similar conditions  Also wondering if the direct injection system contributes to the noise...

The DI system makes a lot of noise, most people notice noise like that. It's probably nothing, but if you are really concerned take it to the dealer.

Ill tell you this, if you take it to the dealership they will tell you its normal engine noise for those cars. If you take it to your well known local mechanic they will tell you its pre-detonation or valve ticking. I had the same thing develop with mine too now look at the crap I am dealing with. http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31568

The tapping, clicking, etc., is normal with the DI as stated above. It's nothing to have concerns about. These engines are basically like a diesel powered with gasoline.

Except that it still has spark ignition, not compression ignition  Gasoline would make a terrible compression ignition fuel, because it burns too quickly...you'd get detonation. The direct injection part is lifted straight from a diesel though...

If your oil pressure is good, you shouldn't ever hear valve tick on a car with hydraulic valve tappets since they run with zero clearance.

That's what I meant but didn't want to get into huge detail about glow plugs vs. spark plugs, etc. I meant it more along the lines that they're noisy and sooty lol.
