So the plug has a magnet on it. It also has a valve to open and drain the oil. What good is the magnet if the intention is not to have to pull the plug out every time? Doesn't it defeat the whole purpose of getting rid of the stock plug? I am going to buy it for the valve portion of it to control the oil flow instead of it rushing out when removing, but I still do not see the point of the magnet on this particular type of plug. What am I missing? Seriously, I must be missing something really stupid.

Well you could remove the plug and inspect for/clean off any metal particulate. After you drained the oil in a controlled fashion?

I have this UPR valve. The magnet is just to attract and hold any significant debris. I’ll fully remove it maybe every other or every third oil change to wipe it off. It’s never had anything significant on it. I’m pleased with my upr plug.

IMO the easy drain ones aren't worth it unless you're going to attach a hose to the end to drain it closer to the pan. I would still take it out every change after it drains through the valve because the valve sits up higher than the bottom of the pan and you would still have a little residual oil left in the pan. Not so much if the car is jacked up on an angle, but more so if it's on a lift or have the car jacked up and leveled. I have the UPR one that isn't a quick drain.

I have this and it works great. I like the metal tabs compared to the plastic OEM.

Nope. The valve allows you to Slowly Open for a controlled oil drain. Or to open just enough to take an oil sample to have it analysed without draining your 10 quarts. Plus it's not plastic. Very convenient.

What's Dat?
Some metal shavings on top of magnet. I get about same amount or a bit more when I drive in high RPM when I change oil 3,000 miles

That is the oil plug I posted bout, well a version of it anyway. The UPR oil plug has a magnet on the bottom and twists in like the OEM. It has a valve that you can open and close to get oil flow without removing the plug totally. It also allows for a 1/2" tube to be attached to direct the oil where you want it without a mess.

this. i didnt realize i had the good one that you can control the flow of and just took it off completely and turned the driveway into an exxon valdez looking mess. newb/idiot mistake. but once you drain the oil out, you can remove the plug completely without making a mess and clean off any metal on the magnet.

in addition, the magnet will still help keep that metal from circulating until you do your next oil change, regardless of whether you remove the plug or not during the oil change. id say why not remove it every time and check it/clean it. cant hurt, and once you've drained the pan, it's literally 60 seconds to pull the plug and wipe it off.

i ordered this one when i first got my car (i got mine used) to replace the factory plastic plug. i ended up returning it when i changed the oil and realized the car already had this in the link:

https://www.lethalperformance.com/u...MIraOfr7-D8gIVFBLnCh15mwYfEAQYAyABEgL8avD_BwE

this one is better, IMO, because you can control the flow. the one i initially bought and then returned is built of better quality than the plastic one, but appeared to me that you could not adjust the flow. with the one in my link with the blue dial, you leave the plug in the pan and turn the blue dial and can control the flow and help prevent making a mess.

once your pan is empty, you can remove the plug completely and clean off the magnet. at this point, you're not making a mess since the pan is empty.
