Tuned cold-start

Hi all,

i have a question regarding the various tunes floating around, specifically the cold-starts. I love my current exhaust setup, but it is simply astonishingly loud at start up, i have read that it is possible to reduce this loudness via one of the tunes floating around.
So here are my questions:
Is it possible to just tune the cold-start, nothing else? I dont want to risk any damage via a tune.
How does the tune work? What is the reason for this loudness at startup, is it to warm up the cats?

It is too warm up the cats. Most tuners will tune what you want for the most part if you ask for things like this, such as reduce the rpm on cold starts or time it stays idled high when cold. What they recommend depends on your mods. Talk to your tuner or email tuner that you have picked out too see if they would do it for you. Headers make it stupid load on cold starts if there are race/high flow cats and a little loader with no cats where some find it unbearable, or at least most neighbors do.

There's not much you can do in a tune to reduce the volume of the exhaust, short lowering idle RPM which will make it a bit quieter but not much really. A loud exhaust will still be loud even at a lower idle.

I LOVE the cold start up with the Borla S-Type w/ X-pipe. Beautiful powerful V8 sound, but not obnoxious.

What exhaust setup are you running that your looking to quite it down?

I retuned mine and made it a lot quieter like about half as loud. Once I switched to E-85 though it would stumble a couple seconds after firing up so I had to put it back to stock for now. I might try to retune it again with a different approach although it not a priority as I plan on getting rid of my muffler delete very soon which is a better solution honestly.

A tuner can change the spark advance on cold start to drastically reduce volume. Standard it is -5 to 10 deg, and advanced after it's warm. This is done to warm the cats quickly, as others have said. The main consequence of doing this is increased emissions until the engine warms.

What you want to do is modify your Cold start retard. On a normal tune it's usually going to retard you to 0* of spark advance until after 60 seconds of run time.

Change these value to what I attached below and the car will no longer retard the timing, it will instead run whatever you normal idle spark advance is. In my case it's 17* of advance. For you it's whatever you set your idle advance to be.

Unfortunately we don't have base idle spark on the 15 and up at least my 16 doesn't have base idle spark so I cannot change it. I had those modified similar to that and it was great on 93 but ever since full E-85 it would slightly stumble 2-3 seconds after cold start because it was commanding way too much spark (30* or so in fact) I had to retard it back to stock there which is around 15* to get it smooth again.

Yeah I did notice that table was missing, that screen shot is from a 15 file I had around. The 50 is only the ceiling for start up.

To the OP, if you do have this issue on start up, you can set the retrard to 15* for the first 60 seconds and then set it to 50 for the rest of the table

I have a quad exhaust with an activation option. When i initially fire it up its basically a 3' straight pipe, after 1-2 seconds the shutters are shut und the sound goes through the second pipe with the mufflers. The shutters work via negative pressure, wich is the reason for the initial loudness. I love the setup, but in the morning i feel a little bit sorry for my neighbours.
