It goes off if in the unlikely event of a collision which ruptures the plastic cans and sends gas all over the place. That much should be obvious. Do we take our chances? That's up to us.
Fair enough, I was more referring to the "time bomb". That had me worried.

Sarcasm aside, the thing no one has mentioned yet is the fact that e85 is a far less volatile substance than gasoline.

Dangerous? Sure, but less dangerous than gasoline as it relates to hauling it in your car in a container.

Ethanol (not E85) is less volatile than gasoline, but the main issue is they're both volatile and will ignite from sparks or open flame near the surface of the liquid, esp in temps above the flash point of Ethanol, which is 55°F, however the flammability properties of E85 are dominated by the 15% gasoline blended into it, so if you're transporting E85, you're transporting gas for the purposes of volatility. Fun eh?

Anyway, better in the trunk than in the cabin. I've transported E85 in cans inside the mustang to events recently (10 gallons of it, for 30 miles), but I prefer to transport it in my truck bed whenever I can.

That's another option, find a friend going to the same place with a truck or trailer and ask them to transport the gas for you.

You are transporting a time bomb,If in collision I hope you are right with God. Cause you are going to meet him
You are confusing him hauling gas with an EV battery

As long as you can exit promptly and you're not wearing polyester the initial flash of flame is not hugely damaging. Hair singed and some burns, sure. It's the long-duration contact that does the most damage. If you get rear ended HARD (like collapsed trunk) and the cans rupture, then yeah do your best fleet-feet move and get 30+ paces away.

I have a few of the VR plastic jugs, they are the standard at all motorcycle events because they are easy to hoist. Can't say I've tried to put them in the trunk of a Mustang though.

I bought a couple of 20 gallon HDPE barrels with 2" NPT bungs that were gasoline/diesel rated. Better is steel for any kind of long term storage duty though. You don't want the ubiquitous blue 'water' closed head drums. The walls are thin.

Nice! I remember 10 yrs ago the only place in all of CFL that had it was the station on Michigan. I do luckily have a Racetrac 8 mins away that has it, but last time I I drove to SFL I had to look up all the stations along the drive so I could fill up! 🤣

how long can you store e85 for? Wondering if getting a few small barrels to keep at home would be worth it. My station is 20ish minutes away from home

Just remember. In Alaska and the northern territories of Canada, they put drums of gasoline on airplanes.

length of the season is no problem. eg March thru Oct. I recommend 20 gal or 30 at most. Much easier to man-handle vs 55. Get one of the vapor vent caps, it'll keep the pressure inside from getting high.

If you have say quad-55 on a pallet/raised platform and out of sight of the HOA you can have a fuel blender do a delivery of E85 or E100 from a truck.

idk how long exactly before its too bad to use, but e85 goes bad faster than regular gas and you shouldnt store it long term in plastic containers.

The problem with Ethanol is that it's hygroscopic - just like brake fluid.

Metal can sealed tight should be good for a year or more. Light and moisture is what causes it to go bad.

I use the VP 5 gallon pails as my gas cans.
