Hey guys,

Looking for your input. I just picked up a 2020 base handling pack GT500 a few months back. Love the car and very happy with the decision. It has all the options I want except for not being a track pack…

I really like the carbon fiber wheels on the track pack and am considering buying them via a private seller to slap onto my base 500 for around 12k (including tires that come with).

Has anyone done this and been happy with the decision? I want to pull the trigger but feel dumb doing it because for 12k I might as well trade my car in on a track pack as the total would be pretty similar.

if you were in my position and own the base 500 outright, would you trade it in for a track pack instead? Interested to hear who has done this trade and if it was worth it.

I would look at some aftermarket wheels before dropping 12k on cf used takeoffs. You can probably get something almost as light and definetly more robust for half what they factory cf go for. Hit up Terrence at signature wheels. He’s done hundreds of gt500 and other exotics and they look amazing. 21” wheels on the gt500 are awesome. I love my signature wheels.

Do you still have your base wheels and tires? I may be selling my 500 that has some signature wheels and if someone doesn’t want to pay for the wheels I’m going to take them off and put stock wheels back ok. I could theoretically take your wheels and some $ for them. Just an idea. I also have an oem CFTP spoiler I may be taking off and selling separate if you really want the track pack look. My car is listed on her for sale so take a look and PM me if interested.

12k for the look is pretty screwy.

buy some great forged wheels for like 3k and then you can go on a luxury vacation with the remaining 9k.

Yes it can be done but you have to replace your wheel studs or replace the hubs with ones from a CFTP. The wheel hub face is thicker on the CF wheels and don’t leave enough threads on a base car to properly engage the lug nuts.

And don’t let anyone tell you CF wheels aren’t strong, they’re certainly strong enough for daily use.

yes this…I have 65,000 miles on mine, from east coast to west coast and all points in between, would recommend 😬👍🏼

and yea, the CFTP wheels are pricey but who cares, it’s your money!

I agree with the others and not spend the money on the oem carbon fiber wheels. If you really want those wheels I’d sell the car and go after a cftp. Where I differ is I‘d probably go the BC forged route, that’s who makes the signature wheels(same factory). I’ve had several sets of bc’s and a set of the signatures. Great wheels and will get you within a few pounds of the carbon weight. Just save some coin going bc as opposed to signature.

I don’t know if that’s a good price or not, but it seemed right to mention them.

As noted in posts above - wheel studs :like:

I would get the CF wheels. You should be able to get a set for 10K without tires. If the tires are good and cup 2s? Spend the 12k and be done.

I would not go the aluminum wheel route. The main reason is they cannot be repaired if you encounter any significant damage. CF wheels are repairable.

There is a reason FP put CF wheels on the most track capable GT500. I guess you can say there is a reason that FP didn't put forged aluminum on their tier 1 500.

I thought one of the "benefits" was they are stiffer, than even the same weight forged "non-CF' material wheel? This supposedly lets you run a bit less static camber, since wheels don't dynamically bend as far in a corner. if you don't track the car, my guess is it won't matter.
Not sure if all the above is true, just what I've heard/read.

When I was looking (about 8 months ago), the CFTP was 10-12 grand more on average, vs same mileage/condition/availability within 1 days drive to look at it in person/etc, non CFTP.

If I had the money, I would go with CFTP, the car would be valued anywhere from 10 to 20,000 more especially if you had a base model GT500. Also, you’re gonna want more carbon fiber if your wheels are carbon fiber like a wing…. That’s another couple grand. plus I would find one with less miles would be a cherry on top. I know you’re gonna have to pay for dealer fees, But you would save on taxes at a dealer they could only charge you the tax on the difference. unless you go privately, then you have to find a buyer.

I have indeed done this exact trade. It’s 100% worth it from a handling and performance standpoint even on the street, but I like to corner hard :) Other factors are whether you fit well with Recaros, can live without back seats, heated/cooled seats, and live with the stiffer ride. You can feel the wing and aero above 130 really doing their thing. At least that’s where I first noticed it.

Lots of good advice here. If you plan on tracking your car on regular basis, I would trade up to a CFTP GT500. Along with the CF wheels, you are getting aerodynamic upgrades, tires, spring rates, Magneride, ABS programming updates as well to maximize balance and grip for the track. If you are just looking for wheel upgrade for the street, plenty of quality forged wheels (Forgeline my favorite) you can get with custom finish, and don’t have to change your wheel hubs to use the OEM carbon wheels.

But as someone already said, it’s your money and do whatever what makes you happy ! Those OEM carbon wheels are stunning 🤩

Also, keep in mind there are plenty of aftermarket wheel companies that offer CF barrels and centers. Not wraps or overlays, but actual carbon formed rims just like the CFTP ones.

MVForged comes to mind, they have some epic custom wheels. If they didn’t cost so damn much I’d have a set on my car lol
