Back in 2012 when I was car shopping for a V6 stang, by pure chance I test drove a GT auto. 30 seconds into the test drive I knew there was no way I could buy a V6 after experiencing the 5.0. It was literally as though the car gods started singing to me. I'm now onto my second GT and loving every minute of it. Zero regrets.

I have no problems with the EB and am seriously considering picking one up for my dad in the near future (assuming that I'm not thoroughly disappointed when I finally test drive one). But if you're torn after one test drive, then I would recommend going with the GT so long as you're in a position financially to do so, as other members already stated. Perhaps you could take a GT for another test drive just to see how you feel the second time around.

Easy choice.
Look at your budget and let it guide you.
Purchasing a car can be very emotional. Remember what your needs and wants are and separate them. I know manypeople living paycheck to paycheck across various socioeconomic and age groups because they let their wants lead them through life. If you have control of your finances and your family is on board, let loose. If it's going to be a strain and possibly keep you working, think twice. And once you've pulled the trigger, whichever path you go, don't look back. Sitting behind anyone of these models is a win - win scenario.

Thanks! Already retired 3 years! This will be a cash deal with proceeds from a house sale. We aren't wealthy but it won't matter much either choice.

Not to be too much of a downer, but a few years ago a guy at my work killed himself. I really respected him and felt bad for his wife and kids. Ever since then I made up my mind that the money left over after the 401k and Roth gets spent however I feel like spending it. That's why I have a GT.

I say talk to your wife. Hopefully she cares about you and will support you doing what you want. Now I'm assuming you are all set for retirement and aren't going to cause yourself any financial problems buying the car. If so - don't buy any new car. Make do with an older one! :)

Good for you!
As a school teacher, I am by no means wealthy. So after 7 years of saving I was proud as a peacock when I dropped cash for the full amount on my beauty. It's a v6 and I couldn't be happier.

As an owner of a Ruby Red Mustang GT with 401A, Nav, ACC, 20" Rims, Automatic with shift pedals.....GET THE GT, MY FRIEND!!! My only con is that the shifting is not as smooth. I feel a bit of a hesitation in low gears. The car is not sure what gear it wants to be in.

I have had my RR GT manual for 3 weeks now and I love this car! My last 3 cars have been a 2000 Audi TT Quattro, a 2004 Infiniti G35s coupe, and a 2009 G37s coupe, and this is my favorite of them all. I got the 50 yr AP because Mustang and I both turned 50 this year. This is my daily driver and I am having so much fun with it. I've only let my poor husband drive it twice because I don't want to give it up! All of that to say-- if the price differential is not a factor in your decision, then go with the GT. You will not regret it. Have I mentioned how much I love this car? :-)

I had the same dilemma and thankfully my wife told me to get the one I really wanted. And I really wanted the GT.

So I have my new Mustang all picked out, my dealer has the specs and will order it any day now for a late Winter early Spring delivery. Ruby red Ecoboost, automatic, with 50 year appearance package. Yes, I test drove one in stock. So what's the problem? Well, yesterday I test drove an automatic GT at another local dealer and I can't stop thinking about how awesome all that power felt! And so smooth!

The practical side of me is saying I don't need that much horsepower. I'm 65 years old, won't be racing it, and know the insurance will be less on the Ecoboost. Plus, my wife may divorce me if I upgrade to the GT. (She was with me for the GT test drive). I know all you muscle car guys will tell me to get the GT. Any other insight would be appreciated.

Help!
I went through the same situation and ended up buying the GT Premium Automatic. I don't race, but all that power is a lot of fun driving around on backroads. I thought the same thing about not racing, not needing the HP, but it's not just about numbers. It's about the smoothness that the GT delivers power.

As for insurance and MPG... My insurance went up 100 bucks a year from a 2012 GMC Terrain (I'm 32, btw), so almost nothing. My MPG with 350 miles on the odometer is around 20 mostly city driving.

I originally planned on buying the EB then I drove the GT. Instincts took over, and well, now I have a beautiful GT in the garage. :)

Thanks Branden! You really described what I'm feeling exactly! I'll be going to the dealer tomorrow. If they've already ordered the Ecoboost then fate made my decision. If not, I may try to test drive the Ecoboost again, then decide. Wife will not be coming with me!

Mark -

If you get the GT, I doubt you'll be questioning that decision down the road. But from your comments, not so sure if you get the Ecoboost. If cost is not an issue and your wife gets on board, I say go for the GT. It'll put a grin on your face everytime you fire it up.

Mark, I was like you considering both...I'm going with the GT over the EB...for a few reasons.

First the obvious. If you are questioning yourself, then that means you should get the GT. Otherwise NO....MATTER...WHAT...you are going to have that nagging feeling in the back of your mind of "WHAT IF". My friend and even my mother said "if you are asking us that, then you need to get the GT because you are having that buyers regret if you get the EB since you are asking us this question of what to get"

If you get the EB you need to run 93 octane in it. With the GT you can run 87 and only lose about 1% HP where you lose about 13% with the EB. So if you are thinking with your head here about MPG, then you don't save as much as you think with the EB.

The EB also needs to be in boost to get that "smile" on your face where the GT has it from start to finish.

You will not get that heart putter with the EB starting up. You will with the GT.

Also, remember this, the GT is more refined now. It's a muscle car but it's also a very nice touring muscle car now in the quality of BMW/AUDI.

And as Branden said, the power of the GT is just smooth. It's really nice and just there all the time.

I mean yah with the same features (other then say PP), it's about a 6K difference, but you get a lot more then just the engine on the GT, you get the brakes, radiator and a few other things. Take into account the savings of 87 vs 93 and over the year you will close the gap a little per year. You also don't have the very nice hood vents on the EB, nor the fanged grille (you can do aftermarket but your $ goes up there...$250 around for the grill, and $800 for a new hood). Lots of little things on the GT that make it unique.

All the reviews about the Mustang in the CotY and other awards have been the GT.

But lastly, like someone on here in their signature says "when you turn your car on, does it turn YOU on?"....a GT will do that.

Thanks Branden! You really described what I'm feeling exactly! I'll be going to the dealer tomorrow. If they've already ordered the Ecoboost then fate made my decision. If not, I may try to test drive the Ecoboost again, then decide. Wife will not be coming with me!
Doesn't matter if they ordered the EB, you don't have to take it. They can always sell that and order you another.

I was in the same boat as you. I was set on an EcoBoost Premium, 6 speed manual with the Performance Package and Nav. Well, after looking at a GT the other day, i told the salesman i wanted to order a Mustang. I now have on order, a 2015 GT Premium, Manual, with the 18 inch Foundry wheels and the Premier Trim with Color Accent Group.

Im only 26, but for the last couple of years ive been working my ass off to get to where i am now after having a few years of bad luck. I just got promoted at work too (i start my new position in a couple of weeks) and i wanted to reward myself. After going over my finances again, total cost of the GT over the EB long term isnt even that much. And with the new pay raise, insurance wouldnt be a problem. Plus, i thought about how i would feel post purchase, after my last two car purchases left me with regret. I learned from those two instances and to get me what i really wanted or nothing at all. I could try to convince myself all day that the EcoBoost was the one for me, but i knew deep down that it wasnt what i really wanted. So now, i have a 4 month wait till my Guard GT comes in, and im super excited.

Bottom line: Get what makes YOU happy, and what you know you'll be satisfied with. It took me a long time to learn that.

It's not of question of "needing" the power of the GT, but knowing it's there when you want it.

A better question now that you're retired, don't you deserve a convertible?
