If you can afford a GT, buy a GT. I cant imagine a scenario where some one gets a GT and later on thinks they should've gotten an EB or V6...

Also, remember this, the GT is more refined now. It's a muscle car but it's also a very nice touring muscle car now in the quality of BMW/AUDI.

And as Branden said, the power of the GT is just smooth. It's really nice and just there all the time.
Not to agree with someone agreeing with me :), but this can't be stated enough. Driving the new GT around town really feels like a luxury performance touring car now. The harshness is very mellowed and everything just feels smooth and refined. I test drove 3 EBs over the course of my decision, and it was a fun car too, but to get that same feeling the RPMs needed to be much higher. The difference is that the GT gets that casual "push you back in your seat" feeling from 2k+ RPMs, but the EB needs to rev much higher to get close to the same feeling.

My parents have owned Porsche, Mercedes, Lexus, Cadillac, etc, just about every major luxury brand, and they couldn't get over how great the ride quality and acceleration were.

Mark,

By the time you read my post you will have made your decision but I will tell you I looked at the Eco Boost hard but eventually decided on the GT. I gave up buying a BMW to get the Mustang as my dream car. The Mustang was must more car for the money and that decision was easy with the 50th this year. the 5.0 can a little tougher as I am a fuel millage guy but I thought hell it's my first Mustang and the car I will own for a LONG time I might as well get what I want so I did. Brother I hope you went with what you wanted not with what made sense or someone else wanted you to get (even if it is your wife). My wife has NO input in my decision and she understood that, of course I will pay for that when she goes to grab that Ford F150 Raptor in a few years.

I just read my wife all the replies so far. The only one she liked was the guy who said I was too old! Ha ha ha!
I have to go against the grain here and recommend the EcoBoost. Your first and second posts mentioned the importance of your wife's opinion. I respect that. You'll preserve the harmony (probably level up a bit) and still get a fantastic car.

Thanks so so much for all the ideas expressed here! Of all the replies, only 1 said not to get the GT and I hope he was only joking about my age.

So I went back to my dealer this morning and they had not ordered the Ecoboost yet! He said they were waiting until 1/15 to meet my requested delivery dates (3/15-4/1). I then told the salesman my dilemma and asked if I could test drive the only Mustang on their lot--a triple yellow Ecoboost. Oh, I was alone today. No wife! LOL. As I expected, the performance drop from the GT was very noticeable this time around! The thrill comes only when you mash it and the boost kicks in. Then it's quite acceptable. It only took about 3 miles until I knew what my decision would be!

Once back in the showroom I had them price up the GT with about the same options as I had on the Ecoboost (plus the 3.55 rear axle). Now for my next question. Is $3595 below sticker price good, bad, or average? This dealer is usually pretty good with pricing.

They are supposed to order it today! No more waiting. The wife will have to live with my decision! LOL It's MY dream car and I already am getting the color she wants! Guess I better edit my signature here.

That is roughly Invoice, then you would also be eligible for the rebates in play. If Ruby is still available when I am able to order next spring it will be my choice. I have visited local dealers no less than 15 times to look at all colors in different lighting. It came down to Ruby, Silver, Magnetic, and Yellow. I love Black but refuse to go down that road again, too much maintenance to look good. Ruby looks good all the time, Silver shows the lines perfectly but does not wow me, Magnetic is gorgeous in the right lighting, and Yellow is definitely an eye catcher. Who knows, I may change my mind 20 times before the time comes and then again Ford may add a color next year. Hopefully Ruby will still be around.

Congrats--I think you'll love it!

Without knowing your options, it's difficult to say how good that price is (but it sounds like invoice). You should check out X Plan pricing (http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8243) by being a member of EAA or Mustang Club of America. There's a lot of threads about it in the Order/Pricing subforum. It's essentially putting you at invoice minus whatever incentives are available when you take delivery. The X Plan pricing site also tells you if there are any current incentives in your zip code. I ended up at X Plan (basically invoice) minus the 1,250$ in incentives. I was really happy with that.

Thanks Branden, but at this point I'll just go with the price they gave me. They were $1200 below what another dealer quoted me on the Ecoboost. They might still give me any incentives that come up.....no contract signed.

I think you got a good deal, Mark. My MSRP was $43,195 and my out the door price was $39,438 - a discount of $3,757. And when I picked the car up on 11/19, Ford had just offered a $500 rebate, which I also got. This brought my out the door price to $38,938.

I was so happy I rolled in the Ford Racing Touring cat back exhaust, which came in several weeks later and the dealer installed. I also put a Bama tune on the car for $400, and I've done a few other things - tinted windows and tinted exterior light lenses, Sto n Sho front license plate bracket.

I'm a happy camper.

Enjoy your pony.

Mark, I think you made the right decision. This sounds like a pleasure car and, being retired, pleasure is your job. The GT is a great choice.

But let me chime in from an EB perspective for those who are facing the same decision and visit this thread for opinions.

A little background: I live in a pretty congested suburb of NYC and I'm a motorcycle enthusiast. I've owned big displacement sport bikes and have found them frustrating to ride in my neck of the woods, so I downsized to a middleweight bike (which is still stupid fast: think 0-60 in about 3.2 seconds). It's more fun to ride most of the time, especially when I get to the good roads farther upstate. There's an old motorcycling maxim that applies here: "It's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow." And while my bike certainly isn't slow, I can use more of its capabilities than a 160+hp 1000cc bike.

I took a very similar approach to choosing a car.

Originally, I wasn't even considering a Mustang until details of the S550 started pouring out last winter. While I liked the last two generations of Mustangs, they weren't what I was looking for. I wanted a sports coupe with great handling and enough power to be fun. Consequently, I was cross-shopping the BMW M235i/228i, 435i/428i, Caddy ATS, Audi A5/S5 and a few others.

One could view the GT and EB as somewhat different kinds of cars. I don't view the EB in stock trim as a muscle car (although no Mustang is technically a muscle car). It's pretty much exactly what I wanted--an entertaining sports coupe with great handling and lots of grip. And it's a good daily driver when I need it to be. By most press accounts, it's also a bit better handling car than the GT, which is very good in its own right. Although it's pretty quick, the EB is really not a straight line car; it's more of a back road burner.

I also liked the fact that the EB is a bit strange and controversial. I'm no Mustang traditionalist, so the development and tuning of these engines is intriguing. I'm interested to see what the tuners can get out of them. I'm thinking that 350+hp and 400+ ft.lbs. is not unreasonable and should be reliable.

Price was really not an issue for me. I was shopping cars that were significantly more expensive than a GT Premium PP. The fact that the EB was thousands less was a nice bonus.

Now, if someone really wants and "needs" the visceral experience of the V8, then the GT is the choice. The EB sound is not very stirring and it doesn't have the shove of the GT. Drag racer? The GT. If someone is an avid track day driver, then it's probably also the GT (although I'm sure the EB will be a blast on track and, with some minor power-up mods, will probably also be a track monster.)

But if someone is looking for an unexpected alternative to European sports coupes, the EB is very compelling and awfully fun to drive. And if you're into the tuning thing, the EB is probably the choice. Two very different flavors for different drivers.

Also--and I'll stop droning on after this last point--to state that the EB is for "sissies" is pretty silly. I see this attitude in bikes, too. We usually laugh at people who talk like that. More often than not, those statements come from people who are desperate for validation and can't find the apex of a corner if their lives depended on it. (And sometimes it does.)

Well stated! For me it is comes down to knowing that I will not wake up with the GT in the garage and wonder if I should have gotten the EB. I could not say the same if I were to buy the EB.

Too old???? I'm 3 mos away from my 73rd B/D and got the GT Premium Auto CO
401A 50 yr pk 3.55 NAV. The other day I was driving down a surface st and just
as I approach the crosswalk the light changed to yellow--I gave the car just a little
gas and all I can say is "MY GOD". "I may date a Plain Jane but I will never drive
one".
