I mainly autox my '16 GT PP, plan on doing some track days next season.

I have put 15k miles on the car since I got the car, on my third set of tires. My second set of tires were Sport Comp 2s and now I have OEM take offs I bought for cheap.

Right now Conti ExtremeContact DW tires are on huge sale and I want to take advantage of it despite not needing new tires atm. I know these are not "competitive" tires like Hoosierstones or even RS3 but my plan is to keep learning the car and go with grippier tires in the future.

I mostly compete in F street and I know there's plenty people out there that have fit 285/?/19 all around on their PP wheels....with minimal sidewall roll but re71rs have stiff sidewalls.

My main question being, what are your thoughts on 285/35/19 all around ExtremeContact DW all around? or should i stick with stock stagger size? or maybe 265 front and 285 rear?

Buy some RE11s in 275/35R19 if you want long lasting with good grip but not wear like chalk hoosierstones. I'm not a conti fan and think they aren't great tires. If your not driving only on the track running 285 is a bad idea.

why is it a bad idea if the car gets driven daily on 285s? just out of curiosity

Honestly at the price range re11 set at, I would either go ahead get the re71r or Rs3v2. I was just asking about the conti due to their sale lol

It is beyond the recommend size of tire for that wheel. It will be bulged and you can have sidewall failure. People go over-sized in autox because they care about best times not safety.

The price on the conti's is cheap just looked for that price you can do two sets to one set of re71r's so I see the appeal. I don't have any experience with them though but the one set of conti's I owned the dsw's sucked.

I've never understood why everyone says that 285's are to wide for the 9.5" wheels.. My 2014 GT500 came with 9.5" wheels on the rear with 285's...

Edit... I see that he is also talking about 285's on the front as well..

I'd do 255/40 square or 275-255/40 staggered with these tires on oem sized wheels.

The folks running 285 RE71s are doing so mostly for heat tolerance at national events with codrivers, I believe.

2015 GT perfromance pack is
9 INCH ON THE FRONT
9.5 ON THE REAR

285 is too big for the front for a car that is driven on the street. 275 is max for the fronts 285 is fine on the rear.

Gotcha. I misread the "all around part"

Saw a guy badly chuck a set of Conti's at the track this summer.

Even on sale these would be may last choice.

I'm on Pilot Super Sports at the moment, but there longevity has not been what I expected. I'll be looking into a set of BFG's in the spring.

That's interesting you'd say that. I've ran my 285 RE71R's on the street. During the summer they are my DD tires and have about 7k of the 8k on my car (remaining 1k is on my winter tires). Stiff sidewalls and all that. I wouldn't do it in a tire like the Conti's which have known soft sidewalls, but I'd say your statement is highly dependent on the tire being used.

I DO think you are overblowing the issue though. There are A LOT of folks running 285's on 9" wheels for DD work with far worse tires than the Conti (Nitto's crappy all seasons or their entry level summers) without issue.

Only reason I wouldn't run 285's square is because I hate how the 285's follow grooves in the road, but that's really minor in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah I heard chunking on the pilot super sports as well..but have autox/tracked on them on my WRX and no issue. I am not saying the DW shouldn't chunk or anything, if i do end up getting them, i really hope they don't.

what do you guys think about 265/285 ?

You will have understeer issues running that much of a stagger. I would only recommend 275/275.

The added benefit of that is you can dismount the tires and rotate them as autox will tear up the shoulders on the front tires. In FS you just can't add enough camber to counteract that wear.

You can have sidewall failure with 285+ on a 9 inch rim. It's great it hasn't happened to you but it can. Back in the rs3 days we had guys have sidewall failure running to big of tires for the rims. It's part of the reason tire stores are getting less lenient about mounting things like that.

The RS3 has significantly softer sidewalls than the RE71R. I have experience with BOTH versions of the RS3 and it has been universally that way on both versions.

Hence, it depends on the tire.

Depends on the tread width, tread design, aspect ratio and tread compound, not carcass width. Tread width should be the same or narrower than wheel width for maximum traction. The wider tread on a narrower rim, the less air you can run in order to reduce crowning. The tread will squirm more too. The narrower tread width on a wider rim requires more air to reduce the tire concaving.

Car will not turn any faster than front traction so focus on that and how the car is driven. You want as much slip angle as you can get before you lose traction (means you can corner faster while turning). Slip angle is partially determined by contact patch and what it does during a corner. If you are running a very wide tire on a narrow rim, you have crowning and the contact patch is less than perhaps the right size tire on the same wheel. Lots to this. Can't just say 285 bad on a 9" wheel; 275 good on the same wheel.
