Curious as to how you stumbled upon that one considering the specs page recommends it for 6cylinder systems ranging from displacement of 5-6.5L?

Damn someone found out my plans!!! I have an hx35 8 blade ready to mock up to see if itll even fit. From the looks it and from other car its a great turbo for people like me that enjoy big turbos. It is not for the majority on here that want quick spooling instant power. The foxbody 2.3 guys swap hx35s, evos and a lot of dsm guys on 2.0 and 2.3 strokers do too but the biggest challenge i believe is getting the oil pressure right because these turbos need a HUGE drain. Ide expect a full boost on a 12cm to be around the 4200-4600 marker.

I was looking at different turbos ranging in the 400 to 500 HP range and this one is super reliable and fairly common. You can find these for 300 - 500 if you look well. You can even get the flanges off ebay

Was wondering the samething it seems to be for bigger displacement engine. Would you have to change to back housing to make it work?

Big turbos are for bigger engines thats how you make more power but this one is attractive because you get the reliability of the OEM manufacturers and do no have to spend ~1k, DSM guys have been using these in the 4g63 with great results (we have .3 displacement and compression ratio advantage).

Hey please document this and keep us posted! Got any pics?? I personally think the compressor cover is huge!!! Has to look nice on a EBM. It would be nice to retain the twin scroll.

You would need to create an adapter with the flanges i linked in my previous post, then custom mate the intake, charge pipe and downpipe. Custom oil and coolant lines. Its work but It can be done for much less than a typical bolt on kit.

The only thing is, our head flow is crap. A 4G63 head is a much better head than what we've got. That's going to make a difference in spooling up a big Holset.

I have some personal experience with hx-35's, though on the diesels they came on. First off, don't worry about the recommended engine size and number of cylinders too much. They came on 1994 to at least early 1998 dodge trucks with the 5.9 cummins 12 valve diesel. The head flow on those is abysmal, and remember, they're long stroke 6 cylinder diesels, so they don't rev very high. When I say abysmal head flow, I think I recall they're under 150 cfm at 28" water on a flow bench. Stock, these engines start defueling at about 2300 or 2400 rpm, with total rpm limiting defuel occurring by about 2800 rpm. Peak torque rpm on these engines stock was generally at or around 1600 rpm. Stock boost was normally in the low 20's.

Now, you may wonder what these turbos can tolerate. Let me give you my experience: Boost in the low 30's is about the point at which the turbo starts making enough heat to render further boost increases useless-meaning that engine output doesn't continue to increase with higher boost. This may or may not be the point at which this would happen on an ecoboost, as the diesel engine almost certainly operates the turbo in a different area of it's compressor map than an ecoboost at the same boost. These turbos are very tolerant of abuse. They are designed to run for hours and hours on heavy equipment and dodge pickups pulling heavy loads for miles. I personally saw slightly over 800 ft/lbs at the wheels on my early '98 dually with the stock hx-35 and a 50 hp shot of nitrous. I think boost was somewhere in the low 40's at that point. Not knowing any better, I ran that turbo at those boost levels for several months. At this point, the turbo had about 230,000 miles on it. Somewhere I have a dyno graph where it made 500 ft/lbs at 1250 rpm, caused by me spraying it on the dyno at 1100 rpm or so. The twisting forces on the shaft under those conditions must have been fantastic. That turbo never failed, I eventually sold it and replaced it with a 64mm that's still on the truck.

The ones that came on dodge trucks are internally wastegated, I don't know about any other applications.

There is also a slightly smaller turbo used on many automatic trans dodge trucks of the same time period called the hy-35. They are very similar, but support a little less flow. I don't know whether their spool times would be any shorter or not.

Then you have the h1c that came on many earlier-than-'94 dodge diesels. Non wastegated, it has a compressor roughly the same as the hx-35 if I remember correctly, but relied on a BIG exhaust housing to limit boost. These in stock form would be a terrible choice for an ecoboost-spoolup times would be measured with a calendar. But, smaller housings, such as 14 cm, 12 cm, and even 9cm, are available to greatly speed spoolup. These are probably REALLY cheap on the used market, and with a small housing and external wastegate, might make a decent option.

If you want to go bigger, there's the hx-40. There are different variants of all of these turbos, different compressor blade counts, and each one has a different map. Maps for these are probably available on the internet for those so inclined.

I have some pictures but i dont know how to post. Ive tried with my custom 3" single exit exhaust with no luck. Basically yes itll need an adapter obviously but thats the only hard part to this and any turbo swap on this platform. I posted a little while back about the iat sensor bung because im working on a 4" intake for this turbo but no one sell them (if anyone can find one or can get MAP/mishimoto to sell me theirs thatd be awesome!) Basic break down,)....

Adapter manifold = hardest part + custom
Intake = easy it not custom, just cut and have a welder line it up then a silicone coupler
Hot side charge pipe = easy, only need one bend with this turbo clocked down + couplers
Coolant line = stupid easy because none just connect a hose to the feed and drain like the map kit
Oil line = not bad. Still have to size up the drain and measure the pressure but most likely a 4an feed to a 12an drain minimum
Down pipe = easy just weld new flange and add a few inches of height
Tune = not sure need to get with tuner when time comes

Would be a lot of money for a small increase. Way better off with a kit for our car unless someone starts selling an adapter flange and you got a good deal on a turbo.
