For the last 3 months I have been trying to buy a 2017 in SoCal at the best price possible. After a few attempts I had two opportunities to buy at MSRP +6k. The first offer of MSRP +6k, I wasn't ready to jump on. But the second offer of +6, I was willing to go +4, but was still declined. I was made this last offer of +6 on Friday. It was the need to make a decision that prompted me to aggressively pursue all my other options. On Saturday I stopped by one dealership and told them that I had to make a decision on +6. That dealer told me that I should jump on that offer as it was a good deal, because they would only do +10.
Firm on my color choice and my resolution to purchase, I walked out of that dealership got in my car and called an Oregon dealer that had the perfect car listed on Cars.com, within 5 minutes I had a verbal for MSRP. By the end of the day I had a deposit placed and credit run and was approved to pick up the car or arrange shipping. The next day, Sunday, I booked a flight for Tuesday. I drove home Tuesday and Wednesday. Conveniently my daughter lives in the middle, so I even had a free place to stay and an impromptu family visit. A $350 plane flight and I save $6,000 plus another $540 in sales tax on the additional increase. I just had to suffer (haha....) and drive the car down the California coast.
It appears that there is still just too much demand locally to be able to negotiate MSRP in SoCal. If dealers are getting big ADM's, it is hard to blame them. But on the flip side, it is just a matter of time before ADM's don't hold. Just not yet.
