Looking to buy newe gears (Ihave base 3.15) and im debating between the 3.55's and the 3.73's. I want better response while being somewhat economical. With those 2 ratios what average gas mileage would i see with 50/50 driving on backroads and interstate? Right now with 3.15 gears i am averaging 22.3mpg.

Honestly I'd go for 3.31 or 3.55. When I test drove a 3.73 GT PP car, it was too short. 3.55 is what I ordered and is close too short, IMO. I think 3.31 is just about the best balance, but alas, cannot be ordered from the factory.

That said, since you have an auto it'd be less of an issue. For a manual the 3.73 is a lot of shifting.

3.55

I ordered my base 2015 Mustang with the 3:55 gears in June 2014, picked it up November 11, and I have 5,000 miles on it already. I love the gear, and get 28-29 MPG with normal driving. I did not have to buy any other package to get it. I am in Ohio.

I thought u had to have 51A in order to get the 3.55 option. Is this not the case?

The Ford site build your own car feature requires it. I'm going to ask my dealer tomorrow if he can speck out a 3.55 w/o the 51A on his ordering system. bThat would solve it.

In stock form the V6 was better other than the wheels from the PP look twice as good. But the stock V6 w/3.55 is a pleasure to drive. It's no GT, but it takes regular and gets up and goes. The ride and handling of the V6 were very, very nice. The PP was stouter, which is nice but not necessarily more enjoyable.
The GT takes regular also. You aren't going to miss the 1% HP loss from not running 93.

Something occured to me while this was keeping me awake last night. In order to get the $395, 3.55 option on the V6, you have to buy the $995, 051A package, which is mostly the wheels (okay, the power seat and the fog lights, too. But mostly the wheels.

But the wheels aren't that great. A lot of people could spend $1400 on 19" better wheels and be very happy. Maybe yu expect to. I did.

If that's the case, then you're paying $1,400 for the axle that doesn't cost Ford anything extra at all, (because they're just keeping the 3.13). I'm not sure it's a good idea after all.

How about just a base V6 MSRP $24K? (I searched. There's a Guard one somewhere around me, if anyone likes Guard.)
Better stock tires, nicer rims, power seat and fogs. That power seat is the majority of the cost.

Have you got a power driver's seat?

Hey guys new member here.

This may be not a smart question but I am new to buying a new car and i'm in the market for a V6 mustang.

I want the 3.55 rear axle but I cannot seem to find anything near me.
Is it possible for me to buy a 3.15 and ask the dealership to swap it to the 3.55 right when I purchase it and just pay the extra 400$? (I want a manual by the way)
I am considering the 051A option but only for the wheels and I don't think I'd get it considering I would probably buy black 18' wheels and put it on.

Thank you all! :)

No. It costs thousands of dollars to change the differential. It isn't just a gear swap.

The 3.55s are hard to find. There's a nice manual one at Bergstrom Ford in Neenah Wisconsin. And there's a bitch'n YYY automatic at Kunes, in Antioch, Il. Otherwise, you have to order. And the consensuses is that it's a good idea.

Thank you! I wanted to avoid having to order because of the "instant gratification feeling of when you buy it off the lot" but I guess that will have to happen.

Best post about gears:

http://www.mustang6g.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20273

Here is the meat of the thread:

For the MT82:
3:31
Pros:
Can hit 60 in second gear
Can go through the ÂĽ mile traps in 4th gear
Higher top speed
MPG’s
Cons:
Feels sluggish/soft
Doesn’t feel like enough gear
6th gear too low

3:55
Pros
Can hit 60 in second gear
Can go through the ÂĽ mile traps in 4th gear
The perfect gear on stock tire size
Cons:
None lol, perfect rear gear for the MT82 gearing imo.

3:73
Pros
Should be the quickest on a taller tire
A little livelier than the 3.55’s
6th more useable
Cons
More shifting
Barely hits 60 in second
Need to shift into 5th going through the ÂĽ mile traps
Less traction in first
Lower top speed
Less mpg’s

I'm leaning toward going down from 3:73 to a 3:55...

Are you sure you can hit 60 with 3.55 in second gear? Let alone 3.73...

The GT will as it has taller transmission ratios. I think you have to shift to 3rd with the EB and V6. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
