Swap tires?

Hi everyone. So I am buying new wheels to replace my 19 inch stock ones. I have 10000 miles on the pirelli pzero a/s. Do I replace the pirelli for continental's now, or wait until they wear out? If the continental 's are that much better, I'll spend the money. Thanks

Continentals are excellent A/S tires. Pirelli is the worst I’ve used. As a general rule of thumb, I wouldn’t wait until the absolute end of life to replace tires. It becomes a safety issue and could cost you much more than just tires, ultimately.

Are you buying new wheels just for style?
Are they the same size such that you can move your Pirellis over to them?

If you don't do any street spirited driving (which I don't recommend, btw), then does it really matter how much better are the Conti tires? Since I have dedicated track day wheels, I drive on the street with Pirelli P0 255/40 A/S and they are fine for me. So in MY particular case, I would just continue to get the long term value out of the tires that I already own.

Furthermore, if you are buying new wheels, AND considering buying new tires, then why not get summer tires for the new wheels and have two sets? You can run your current wheels longer into the impending winter months.

Or you could do that, and put up your current wheels for sale, to offset your expense somewhat.

I should think your current tires might go to 40-60,000 miles total.

I'd recommend purchasing new wheels, with a 9.5 (+30-ish) or 10-inch (+40-ish) width for a square setup. Purchase them with Continental EC DWS-06 all-season tires (285/35 R19 for 10-inch or 375/40 R19 for 9.5 rims) and then keep the Pirellis as spares. The Contis are much better than the Pirellis. You will benefit from better handling/ cornering. The costs of wider rims/tires are slightly more tramlining at low speeds and somewhat less cushy ride comfort. You will feel the road more. A square setup is practical for a daily street driver.

I agree with GTP. I would also add, since you are buying new wheels, you may want to go wider than the stock wheel and then go with a wider tire than stock, especially if you go with the summer tire route. Having said that, the Continental ExtremeContact DWS 6 Plus is an excellent tire. I would still buy a wider wheel and tire size than stock, if buying new wheels anyway.

I forgot - if you go with wider wheels and don't already have them, install some Rok-Blokz to protect the car sides from gravel chips. ;)

Yep, I've got both, with PPF on the rear flares/scoops (GT/CS).

I'm not sure if I want to deal with 2 sets of wheels. I was looking at 255/45/18 instead of the current 255/40/19 as an alternative so as to provide a little more sidewall. Thanks everyone for your imput and suggestions.

If buying for style, I would suggest taking a look at some of the setups in the aggressive wheel thread. I have only once bought new wheels in the same size as the originals for any of my cars that came standard with wheels that were LESS than a 10" width. I regretted that choice, as soon as I mounted the wheels and tires. I do understand we all have different tastes when it comes to styling tastes

I am confused. You say you don't want to deal with 2 sets of wheels and then say you are considering 255/45r18 to replace the 255/40r19.....ahhhh that is definitely 2 different sets of wheels.
