Swapping out tires on same wheels vs dedicated summer wheels?

I purchased my 2017 GT with the Performance Pack back in September. As it got colder I switched the tires out for Michelin pilot sport a/s 3 and kept the Pirelli tires in storage, intending to use them this summer.

Being busy and generally not trusting the service shops in my area, I have waited until now to decide to have the Pirelli tires installed back on.

Do any of you know if it is bad to get the same tires switched on and off wheels more than once?

Am I better off waiting and buying dedicated summer wheels, or does it not matter? I have read mixed opinions on this, but have failed to find much after doing a search.

I appreciate any experience you may have with this.

How would a tire and wheel possibly wear out off/on? Obviously this is some concern you have so please explain it.

I think OP means wear and tear from mounting and unmounting the tire from the rim seasonly.

I've done this on my Acura and never had problems - 3 year lease so 6 times with the same summer and winter tires. The tire shop has never told me anything was wrong with either set.

I think your fine.

Personally, I've had enough of paying for a full balancing every season so I'm just going to buy winter rims for the Mustang and snow tires and leave them on there. Especially seeing how the Mustang needs a road force balance - don't really want to pay for that every season and Buffalo can be very hit or miss. And the fact that I need 2 sets - winter tires for the Acura / wife and winter tires for the Mustang / self.

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. I read that the tire bead could possibly get damaged/worn out, so I wanted to hear from someone who does it every year like yourself. Thanks so much!

I am with you on the balancing. Eventually, I will have another set of wheels. Hanging around in the wheel forum is dangerous for my wallet!

Yes an installer can break the bead on a tire getting it off. I had this happen at a firestone and they refused to admit it. I thought it was odd the guy INSISTED that I keep the tire inflated to 40 psi. Then I realised why when it wouldnt hold pressure. (He was only fixing a puncture)

So yes it can happen, but if you use a good experienced professional shop you shouldnt have any issues dismounting/remounting a tire, and doint that will be a lot less expensive than buying new rims, at least for 4-8 years.

I did separate wheels. Less time going back and forth to the shop to get them mounted, and dont have to worry about transporting the tires back and forth, because you know 4 tires wont fit in this car lol.

Less chance of them breaking the bead, less money in balancing, and if theres a sudden season change and I need to switch them back temporarily I can do that easier than going back to the shop again (and lugging the tires there somehow)

Separate wheels is less hassle, just more $$$$.

You can certainly fit 4 tires inside the cabin. 285 wide too. One goes in the wheel well, another on top of that one in the trunk, then with the back seats folded down, one on it's side lying down on the rear seats, partially in the trunk, and another partially resting on that one on the other side of the rear seats. OR, one in the trunk, and three upright in the rear seats (not folded down) with the front seats pushed forward a bit more than is comfortable.

I fit four tires one time that same way too, with the back seats folded down. Either that or borrowing a relatives minivan. Maybe that is the trick. Hire a transporter to move the tires. It would be nice to find a reason to get Jason Statham involved, assuming he is now an uber driver.

At this point, I might as well by some wheels.

Personally I do the separate wheel and tire for several reasons. First I go down a size for winter (which I know you can't do). But even if I couldn't go down a size, the chances of damage are much higher in the winter with salt, frost heaves, hidden pot holes or sliding in to something (though I haven't actually done that one, knock on wood). Also, a tire mounted on a wheel does not take up any more room than just the tire, so storage isn't an issue. Finally as others have said, I just want to be able to do the swap on my time without worrying about scheduling it with a shop.
Further I keep track of where the tires were when I took them off and use the swap to do my tire rotation, so I'm not paying for that either.
