My driveway has a downward slope. Often when I start to go down my driveway without my foot on the throttle, the rpms go way up for a bit. It's a bit unnerving but I'm not sure it actually results in any acceleration but I always hit the brake. Is this just downshifting or something? I know it will rev match when I downshift going down a hill, which is stupid, it should only do that when accelerating. But this generally only happens when it's cold.

Your engine is connected to the wheels, when your car accelerates downhill due to gravity, the wheels spin faster which causes your engine to spin faster.

You need to rev match during downshifts to prevent unnecessary wear on your clutch and transmission, it has nothing to do with acceleration.

It's just engine braking
There is no noticeable engine braking happening, if anything the car is accelerating. I can't tell if it's causing the car to accelerate or if it's just gravity though, sometimes it feels like it's in neutral.

The engine speed is not proportional to the vehicle/wheel speed, the revs go way up with no significant change in the vehicle speed.

Sure it will reduce wear, but I only need to do this rarely and any additional wear would be negligible. I would do this with a manual trans sometimes but you are supposed to let off the gas before engaging. But this car surges forward, which is the last thing you want when you're trying to slow down.
