has anyone ever cut and removed this before and kept using their stock air box with a plug in place where the cut was made? was it any louder than stock? just curious.

I have not seen anyone do this and I don't expect there to be much of a difference. In my opinion, sounds like a lot of work with chances of having some bad vacuum leaks for nothing. What it sounds like you want is the Airaid MIT replacement tube. It will remove the resonator and it provides smoother flow and looks better as well, no tuning required.

Let us know if this is a valid option for you or if you have any other questions.

Thanks.

Glad someone asked this, Not ready for a tune or CAI yet but would like to improve factory air box. And the big one hanging from the bottom of the intake tube by the fan?

When I had the stock box off, I noticed you could reach your hand to the opening for the tall (first) resonator. You could use a small rubber stopper if you wanted to eliminate it without cutting. If you did cut it from the top then you would not have to worry about vacuum since it is pre maf. The resonator on the intake tube on the bottom is a different story since it is post maf. You could use the Airaid MIT as suggested by Derek to address that one and still keep the stock box.

I wonder what the gains would be from just upgrading that one piece

Yeah, just cut that crap off. I bet you're way smarter than the engineer who developed the intake for this car. Sure, he or she went to school for years and worked hard to get a job at one of the leading auto manufactures of the world and then went through countless designs and CFD simulations to optimize the intake system for both power and efficiency but screw that guy! You really know what this car needs because you heard smoother is better!

It's called intake pulsation and resonators are used for a reason. Ever wonder why intakes don't give you any gains? It's because engineers know what they are doing!!

So your car will stay completely stock, right? I mean, engineers know what they're doing and nothing on the S550 can be improved upon.

Lmao, gtfo!

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying hacking up the intake tract it's going to make an improvement.
