There is a specific tool used to gap Iridium plugs. Tapping them on something is not the correct way. The tool gaps both standard and iridium plugs.

Here is a good link: http://densoiridium.com/installationguide.php

They suggest using pliers to increase/decrease the gap but if you slip with the pliers and knock out the electrode or porcelain you can watch your 9 dollars go in the garbage one by one.

Another way to do it is to use a socket and vice as shown below, but not everyone has a vice, or a gapping tool. So, using wood laid on a bench; lightly tap or push on the wood to decrease gap. This has worked out sufficiently for many garage installers for many years.

Just swapped out spark plugs for NGK 6510 and my car is running smoother, even shifts better... placebo effect... maybe. Oh well, logs don't lie and after a couple WOT runs no knock! Original spark plugs all had gaps between .032 to .034. +1 on changing out spark plugs if your going to mod

Just picked up some ngk 6510. They all came gapped at 0.035. I plan to gap to 0.028. Did everyone else have to gap their new spark plugs? I guess I thought they would be pre gapped to 0.028.

I just swapped mine this evening. The Ford plugs were pretty consistent between .030-.032. I went with the NGK 6510, which came gapped closer to .040. I regapped them to .028 using the old Am Pro gap tool and some channel locks.

Finally changed my plugs with ngk 6510 as well. I decided to gap them by gently tapping with the wooden arm of a hammer to 0.028. The ones I pulled out we're all gapped to 0.030. You know, I ve been very luck in that everything has been put together fine on my car. I here many have issues with panel alignment, loose clams, spark plug gaps amongs other issues but I have been lucky. ........Knock on wood.......

If you don't have a vice I have done it with great success using a clamp like the one in the link below.

Replaced my stock plugs with NGK 6510s. Checked all factory plug gaps and they were .028 on-the-money.
