So I'm flying along from Tokyo to Kyoko on the world famous Shinkansen. I happened to pull up my GPS app and took a screenshot of the fastest the bullet train went.

So, which would you say is faster? The fastest speed I saw on my trip to Kyoko? OR the fastest that I got my GT500 CFTP at the Daytona International Speedway?

The 500, just …

But the question should be, which one was most fun … ? :sunglasses:

if the bullet train runs flat out at 199mph then i'd say the train but they don't always run flat out - i know my trip out 2020 we had the tourist pass and we had to use the slower Shinkansen which was still frikking fast and on time. On time, what an amazing concept.
Be nice to have choice of both train and gt500 (RHD hahahahah argh), no argument there :sunglasses:

Google says the train is faster, unless you have modified your GT500. But I'd much rather drive a GT500 just crawling along at 180 mph than be in a train whipping through the countryside at 200 mph.

I based my vote, and my post above on the assumption / guess that the train will rarely (ever ?) bob along at its maximum speed, and it will more likely be somewhat below it.

It's also not a bench race or magazine test, it's what it did when Tomster was actually on it (and and his 500 has gone a little faster than the standard numbers would suggest) :like:

Yep, all data derived from experience and personal observation.

Probably the train but I voted GT500 just becuase most 500s will never race a train let alone leave the temperature controlled garage they are stored in.

Painting with quite the wide brush there eh? Tom races his, mine has 22K miles on it (even though I have climate controlled garage).

So if we go by fastest speed of 285kph (177mph) as stated on the Shinkansen website for that exact route I’m going to say your GT500 has seen higher speed on the Daytona straight as cars average 180+ during races there.

I said GT500 because I don’t think a bullet train with passengers on board is going to run at its absolute top speed. I’ve not been to Japan so I don’t have any experience to base that on, but I do commute to work via train and it doesn’t run at its top speed (at least that I know of). Also just wanted to follow for the results when Tom shows them.

I just thought it was a neat observation that I wanted to share.

The winner is.......

The GT500 at 186.8 mph (unmodified)

A close second is the Shinkansen at 176 mph.

To be fair, if you modified a GT500, it would beat the top end speed of the bullet train. However, you'd be out of gas in 25 minutes. It kind of reminds me of flying the T-38 in afterburner. You can go fast, but not for long (20 mins to flame out in full burner)

Disclaimer..... 186.8 mph is serious business. The car was prepped and safery equipment were installed. The car was driven on a track with safety responders available. Don't be that kook (like the guy who got banned from here) to drive those kind of speeds on public roads.

Here's a couple of parting gifts from my day in kyoto.

Ps, I still haven't seen any mustangs here in Japan so far.

@Tomster if you're in Tokyo Sunday try get to the daikoku car meet Sunday morning. You should see some Mustangs there, lhd and rhd and a stunning mix of everything else.

Nice result on beating the train speed, I can't imagine driving at such speeds.

Thanks. Not sure when I'm getting back to Tokyo. Should be Sunday, so I'll check it out if I am there in time.
