which state you got your car from? I heard the dealers, depending on the state that they are in, will/can collect tax from the buyer and send it straight to their local DMV. Then that local DMV will transfer all the tax to CA DMV.

As we all know, different state has different tax rate on cars. This means, if the state that you purchased the car from, has a lower tax rate than CA, the dealer is suppose to send the buyer a Cashier Check (payable to CA DMV) for the difference.

Also, I learned that not all states are connected with CA DMV that allows/required the above-mentioned method for tax collection.

Thoughts?
I got it from Kansas Fort Briggs dealer. When they did my financing they said they couldn't include it, which i didnt mind. I also believe that collecting the DMV info was going to be through a 3rd private party and I heard one horror story from a member here that it was a mistake to do that.

I have not heard of anyone getting a check, in that case why would you pay the dealer only to have them send you a check back?

I bought mine in Illinois which has sales tax sharing with CA. I paid Illinois tax, signed some form for the dealer, and then paid the delta when I registered the car.

But yes like others have mentioned, I bought mine out of state, did everything by phone/email and had the car shipped privately.
This is the normal process if the selling dealer is not registering the car on your behalf.

I signed a form with the NM dealer which basically said I would pay for any additional funds needed and they would refund me for any excess tax or fees collected. Since they are handling the registration in CA I won't pay any fees directly to the DMV. Unless the dealership managed to collect the exact right amount they will probably end up refunding me a small amount.

It is not uncommon for dealerships to have minor errors with tax and reg fees even for in-state purchases. I received a small refund after purchasing my Ram last year for this reason.

learned that Illinois is one the states with reciprocal sales tax law, which means they (the dealers) are suppose to collect the sales tax (base only on the county's rate of the dealer), and we (the buyer) will handle the difference when we get to the DMV in California. The dealer is suppose to give the buyer the tax-receipt (some kind of IL DMV Form filled out by the dealer) showing the amount of tax that buyer has already paid, when he/she arrives at the DMV in CA.

AAA said they cannot handle dealer-purchase.:headband:

I need a drink whenever i think about having to go to the DMV in L.A.

Yeah that all makes sense given mine came from IL as well, and yeah AAA was no help. I just made an appointment, made sure to have all the forms ready, smog already done and it was actually pretty painless. I was in/out in 45 minutes including the inspection and retaking the eye exam to get the corrective lenses removed from my license since getting LASIK.

what about inspection on the car? did you make a separate appointment for that? Or that one appointment took care of the inspection too?

Nice. Good news to hear all of this. I'll be doing the exact same thing in a few days, if not tomorrow.

If you are going to spend huge money on a car known for its track prowess, why would you want one you cannot take to a track? ESPECIALLY if they fixed the issue for the next model year? I am sure it is no fun, and a downer and a ball buster to brag about a car, and then, either on a track or on a highway, have a Miata blow by you because you are stuck in limp mode.

Bought mine through a broker. Had never seen one in person before mine was delivered to my house. Great buying experience.

Nobody knew about limp mode when I ordered or even after I took delivery of my car. I have over 6000 miles and have yet to hit limp mode. Ever since enabling Trans Temp I haven't even gone over 200 degrees. I haven't hit the track, but I haven't "babied" the car either.

You are not driving the car hard enough, obviously, which means the tech pack is perfect for you. Nothing wrong with having a good experience.

This doesn't negate the argument that buying a GT350 with the track bits is a no brainer and that's why MY17's are more popular. You don't have to compromise and its prudent not to, especially on performance stability in a car meant to be driven hard.
