I bought some side stripes for my car after seeing some members cars who had added them. I'm now having second thoughts. Anybody else add them recently? I'm now thinking it looks cleaner without them.

I think so. (Please disregard the trakk tape on the portion of the car with no xpel).

I have the California special stripes on my GT. I think they look pretty good as long as they are the right color for the car.

Silly question? Did you put the stripes over the xpel or under?

Under, but there are pros and cons either way.

Under.... the stripes are semi permanent. It would be a costly decision to want to remove the stripes after xpel is applied over them. Also, a very fine edge can be seen where the stripe meets the xpel. I keep pressing down on it to remove the void, but it keeps rising again.

Over......... you can change your mind, tear them off, and they are easy to install again if you nick them or change your mind.

I'm in the "over" crowd, mainly because of the air gaps at the edges as Tom mentioned. If an installer can prevent that, I have yet to see proof.

Plus, if you take care of the stripes, they'll last a long time and, as Tom said, it's a whole lot easier (and a WHOLE lot less work and money,) than if they were "under."

Finally, PPF over stripes is only mild protection. Any substantial hit is going to show in the film anyway so why put up with the air gaps?

Tom: I like the looks and plan to do the same. I probably asked, (and can't tell from the image nor can I check the link cuz Firefox lost it,) did you have a choice of matt or glossy with the aftermarket side stripes?

For your particular combo I think NO side stripes. I think you want them to match your regular stripes which are white, white on the side i think would take away from the car. Now if they were black side stripes i would say its up to you, but then they wouldn't match the regular stripes and just be weird. Just my opinion.

I have gloss black. Yes, there is a choice.

I just ordered a second set of gloss because when the car goes back for the remainder of xpel, they will have to do one of the doors over again (some dirt got under it). I may not need the new set (the xpel may not pull the stripe off, so let me know if you'd like to buy mine as opposed to returning them to the mfg.

If you wind up with a virgin set that you don't need, I'll take 'em, Tom but I'll be surprised if pulling the film doesn't damage the stripes at least a little.
Right. Thats why I bought another set. I'll let you know. When I told my xpel installer about it, he got a little nervous, until I told him I'd pay for the stripes. I wonder whos going to pay to put the stripe on, LOL

Heck, you can put that stripe on yourself easily, Tom, as long as you keep it good and wet with "film goo" or just a little detergent and water.

BTW, did you ever finish the helmet?

Standing by on the stripes.

This is the only side stripe I like. I don't like the OEM one without the GT500 on it.

When the project is done, the helmet will be updated and the paper car will be honorably retired.

Don't want to jinx myself.

@marklboris gets the credit for this. He has been on the cutting edge of GT500 mods right out of the gate. Its a shame I got my car so late, many of these mods were on the list a long time ago. Carryovers from my GT350R stuff.
