I would use a new gen2 block because at $796 with free shipping it’s almost the same price as what a machine shop will charge to prep and bore your block.
The gen2 block can use cylinder supports that make it good for 1200whp or more. (making it stronger than the gen3) the gen3 can not.
For your goals I wouldn’t waist the money on a 5.2 you don’t need it. If you just want it then sure but not needed. Also It will Significantly increase the price.
Compression ratio is going to depend on how much boost you want to run. Low boost higher compression. High boost lower compression.

What kind of budget are we talking about?and are you capable of building yourself?

When talking budget, I really wanted to do a build, but just couldnt justify it when I had tracked the Whippled 2015 for two seasons ,in hot arse Texas, on road courses. Lol.
Long block was like $3800 w core swap.
Never shot for more than 730 rwhp street and mostly ran it 630 rwhp on road courses.

Entertainment value per dollar, 750 rwhp or less and spend money on tires and brakes worked for me...

You can stay at 850-900 wheel on a stock gen2. could last 20mins could last 10years. I ran 900whp for about 18months no problem but you never know. If you just want piece of mind then rods $700ish, piston kit $850, studs $300, opg/cs $300 total $2150. While you are there I recommend aftermarket secondary timing chains $200, gt350 primary chains $70, boss chain tensioners $120. Bearings 150-300, gasket set $250 Total $3,000ish plus machine shop labor. Or just ride it tell It blows and have a gen3 shortblock on standby for $1800 plus core

My advice would be either stick with a stock block (at the power levels you're planning on running) or if you upgrade, upgrade all the way and buy once/cry once.

You know you can put one of those together yourself for half the price?
I actually think it's a fairly good deal. I'd bet you would have at least $3700 into building a new one like this yourself and you have to do the work. For most, this shortblock looks to be a great budget build. No, it's not going to take 1500hp all day but for the average 800hp street car it's hard to complain about.

We're getting ready to do another motor build after just doing a sleeved motor for our customers GT350. This time, our customers 2018 Whippled GT fried his rings but mainly it was due to shotty work from another place. We're pulling the motor, reusing the crank, Manley rods and pistons with ARP throughout, new tensioners and chains and he's getting a valve job done on the heads due to all the gunk that flew in there. With all labor its 7k out the door. Luckily his cylinder walls are clean and may just require a cleaning.

We do engine builds weekly, give us a shout we've done builds for guys just wanting 1k to cars making 1500.
